Memory: Not Perfection but Blessing

11/5/2018

This Sunday, Rev. Mike Adamek began exploring our monthly theme for November: "Memory."  Our memories of the people, places, and events that have touched us are key to our sense of identity, of living our lives as a continuous self.  Even beyond that, our memories of those who paved the way for us and the memories we hope to leave behind can connect us with a certain sense of immortality.  But memory can also be unreliable.  Memories of hurt can hold us back from leading healthy, vibrant lives.  Moreover, we are constantly forgetting some memories and reconstructing others with unconscious additions of fiction.  When we entrust our loved ones or our legacy to memory, Rev. Mike suggested, it is not that we leave behind some perfect and complete imprint, but can still embrace it as leaving a blessing to those who remain and those still to come.

A more immediate thing to remember is Election Day this Tuesday, November 6th!  Our 5th UU Principle is to affirm and promote “The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.”  Now is the time for that “society at large” part!  Please go to the polls and vote your conscience.
Sample ballots and more information are available  from the Missouri Secretary of State's website: https://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/
Our own Katherine Connor has also put together very useful information on the upcoming ballot initiatives; if you would like this information, contact Katherine: [email protected]

Next Sunday, November 11th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"Climate Crisis," Bob Boldt
Do you recall a time when government leaders rose to the moment and acted aggressively to ensure a better world for our children and grandchildren? Is today’s political environment  ignoring dire warnings from the world’s top scientists?

Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am
Message: "Memories of our UU Past," Jim Davis
If you have a joy or concern that you would like to have read during the Service, please submit it by noon on Friday through our website: http://uufjc.org/joys--concerns.html

UUFJC News and Events this week:

We need someone to step forward and coordinate our Salvation Army meals.  The coordinator will have a lot of help learning the ropes and providing the food.  If we don't have a coordinator by the end of this year, we will probably have to give up this longtime community service of our Fellowship.  If you are willing to step forward, please contact Roberta Dunkel.  (Note, we are not serving at the Salvation Army in November or December due to the holidays.)

The Membership Committee is looking for people willing to give rides to members and friends who can't drive to church on Sundays.  We currently have two people needing rides.  If you can help, please contact Bob Antweiler.

This Thursday, November 8th, our Sanctuary is reserved by a community group starting at 6:30 pm.  Please allow privacy.

Later Thursday evening at 7 pm, the local chapter of the American Association of University Women meets at our building, in the Forum Room.  This month's speaker will be Ms. Ellie Hayes of Missouri Cures Educational Foundation.  She will give us the latest research on stem cell research.  Meetings are free and open to the public.  Contact Charlotte Parsons.

Next Sunday, November 11th, the Worship Service Committee meets at 6 pm.  To get involved in creating our Sunday Services, contact Lisa Sanning.

Coming Monday, November 12th, the UUFJC Board meets at 6 pm.  All are welcome to attend our board meetings.  Contact Katherine Connor.

Later that evening, Monday, November 12th at 7 pm is the monthly UUFJC Lecture Series.  This month: "Healing Trauma to Reduce Violence and Addiction," presented by UUFJC's own Jan Harcourt, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner.  For more about our Lecture Series, contact Carol Bontempo or Frank Rycyk.
