Note: Don't forget Election Day this Tuesday, November 8th! In the spirit of our 5th UU Principle, “the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large” we encourage our members and friends to vote using their best discernment.
More information about this election's ballot is available at the Missouri Secretary of State's voter website: sos.mo.gov/elections/goVoteMissouri.
Sunday, November 6, 2022:
This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin our month of reflection on Change.
Our wider UU community is often focused on Change: on changing ourselves and our world for the better and on navigating the challenges that change always brings. This poem seeks to capture the place where many of us find ourselves, and I hope it will inspire some helpful reflections for you this month:
To Outgrow the Past
By William Laurence Sullivan
To outgrow the past but not extinguish it;
To be progressive but not raw,
Free but not mad, critical but not sterile, expectant but not deluded;
To be scientific but not to live on formulas that cut us off from life;
To hear amidst clamor the pure, deep tones of the spirit;
To seek the wisdom that liberates and a loyalty that consecrates;
To turn both prosperity and adversity into servants of character;
To master circumstances by the power of principle,
And to conquer death by the splendor of loving trust:
This is to attain peace;
This is to pass from drear servitude to divine adoption;
This is to invest the lowliest life with magnificence.
And to prepare it for coronation.
For those who would like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service message from this morning is available to view online: https://youtu.be/Ci9Sg9VwDb0

UUFJC News and Events this week:
We are always in need of donations for our free community pantry. Due to the rainy and cool weather, our pantry coordinator Joan Kurtzeborn suggests that during November we contribute items such as umbrellas, gloves, hats, scarves or socks for our pantry. Items are useful for children or adults. For more donation ideas and information, contact Joan. Reimbursements are available; contact our treasurer, Bob Antweiler: rp8mm9@gmail.com.
Note: the local chapter of the American Association of University Women has rescheduled their meeting this month due to Election Day, so they will not be meeting in our building this week as they normally would. Watch for their meeting next week, or contact Charlotte Parsons for more information.
Alberta Mobley teaches her own Chair / Accessible yoga classes at our building Tuesday mornings at 9:30 am. Donations requested. For more information, contact Alberta. (Note: these classes will be ending after Nov. 22nd.)
On Thursdays at 5:30 pm, Katherine Connor hosts a weekly Zoom Happy Hour for UUFJC Members and Friends to gather and check in.
