UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water" May 2022
Sunday, May 8th, 2022
This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us via Zoom to speak on the “un-regarded epiphanies of every blessed day”. His sermon, titled Nurturing Beauty, explained that beauty is inherent in the natural world, which is the source of all verbal expressions of itself. The core of transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson's life was the un-regarded epiphanies of life. Emerson not only studied the natural world by reading scientific publications, but he also read a vast variety of religious texts to open himself to a deeper and more profound understanding of the beauty of the world. Beauty cannot be measured by objective standards and doesn't have to lead to anything else. An appreciation of the humanities, to understand the feelings and values of ourselves and others can lead us to a better understanding of beauty. We can gain a perception of beauty through works of art; the details the artist wants portrayed can be made to be seen clearly in their work. Paul Cézanne did this by altering slightly the details in landscapes to give the viewer the impression he desired. Instead of simply producing a re-creation of the landscapes, Cézanne gave us an impression of what he wanted the viewer to see in the landscape. Epiphanies can come from constant attention and study of beauty, anyone can do this in their own way when we give our undivided and sustained attention to deepening our lives through studying the natural world or by creating compositions of art. (Summary by Logan White)

This Tuesday, May 10th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "From Need to Reality: Fresh, Locally Produced Food for Jefferson City." The journey from food insecurity and limited income opportunities to economic stability, better health, and reduction of chronic killers (obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure) started with an idea to develop a local food system. Our neighbors to the north have been working on this for some time in partnership with the University of Missouri Extension, many community partners and interested individuals. Despite the unique nature of the diverse Jefferson City culture, this journey started in a similar way. Jefferson City is inhabited by resilient people with specific needs. In 2020, Lincoln University Cooperative Extension, in partnership with Building Community Bridges and the City of Jefferson, applied to the EPA-Local Foods Local Places project. The award was granted. This project supports a coming-together around the development of a local food system. It’s bigger and more holistic than the focus of the LFLF grant awarded in 2-15. This presentation from Sarah J. Eber, human nutrition and health program coordinator, will provide a little history and focus on this new journey to engage participants in being a part of…the Rest of the Story. Contact Madeline Matson. For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.
This Thursday, May 12th at 7:30 pm is the monthly meeting of the local chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Meetings are currently being held virtually. To register or for more information, contact Alicia Erickson at [email protected].
