UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, October 2022
Sunday, October 9:
This morning, we continued exploring our monthly theme of Courage with a recorded service from our wider UU Community: Courage, led by Rev. Dr. Natalie Fenimore, from the UU Church of Shelter Rock in New York. Drawing on examples from Michael Servetus to Rosa Parks and taking inspiration from the recent Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur, Rev. Dr. Fenimore reminded us that any act can bring us face-to-face with fear. Failure is always possible; criticism is often likely. Courage is not the erasure of fear, but the mastery of fear, listening to its reasonable cautions but moving beyond it when we need to to live into our highest values. As flawed human beings, we will fail at times, and we will cause hurt sometimes despite our best intentions; facing this truth can be the most fearful task of all, but we must find the courage to forgive, recommit, and move forward. This is the lesson of Yom Kippur; may our faith community also help us to find this courage.
For those who would like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service message from this morning is available to view online: https://youtu.be/u3Z74FcO1UA

"The Judging Virus," Dick Dalton
The Judging Virus is a meme, an expression of cultural information spread by social intercourse, infecting at least 99.9% of humanity. Superior and inferior thoughts/beliefs with their attendant feelings and actions are experienced by the host and are very contagious. Healing/forgiveness comes when we deliberately and consistently substitute a different belief in its place.
