Possibilities Anyway

This Sunday, Pastor Nancy TannerThies continued our monthly theme with a sermon on “Possibilities Anyway”.  She set the stage with a litany of “I am so tired,” citing 25 aspects of our lives.  But in spite of being tired, we can still choose possibilities for now and beyond.  Pastor Nancy then told a creation myth and how we deal with paradox, opposites, two poles.  We tend to jump in one direction; we need to consider a range of possibilities with the help of other folks.  Since our choices are based on our values, we need to examine our values, based partly on the seven UU principles.  Pastor Nancy quoted a letter from Thomas Merton during the war in Viet Nam.  Merton wrote that all our efforts may not change events much, but “personal relationships save everything”.  It is hard to live in paradox, but we show up, make choices and create a desired future.  Pastor Nancy concluded with a recording of the song: “We shall be known by the company we keep…It is time now, and what a time to be alive…In this Great Turning we shall learn to lead in love”.  (Summary by Roger TannerThies)
