Farewell to September

10/3/2024

Dear UUFJC Members and Friends,

As we say farewell to September in the coming days, we witness changes in temperature, sunlight, and landscape. For some of us, there may be trepidation and uneasiness for what is to come. Let us embrace the present and live in the moment as we welcome autumn, for every season serves a purpose.

Peace and Gratitude,

Mary Jo LaCorte

How Worship Works ~Rev. David Schwartz

8/6/2024

This past Sunday morning, we began our theme for August --- "Celebrating Blessings" with a message from our wider UU community via video.  Earlier this year, Rev. David Schwartz of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder considered "How Worship Works."  As the church summarizes: "Why do we do worship services the way that we do worship services? We'll walk through the flow and function of the service right as we do it in an effort to discover how to get more out of a Sunday morning."

An Alien's View of our World ~Rev. Dr. Daniel Kanter

7/30/2024

This past Sunday morning, we wrapped up our month of reflection on "Play" with a message from our wider UU community.  Rev. Dr. Daniel Kanter of the First Unitarian Church of Dallas.  As part of their "Faith & Film" series, Rev. Daniel explored "An alien's view of our world" through the spiritual lessons and themes of the film "The Brother from Another Planet."

"Faith and Film" (or another such series, "Popcorn Theology"), reminds us that one strength of Unitarian Universalism is its openness to playfulness.  Some of us have been wounded when the meaning we found in entertainment media was rejected by other faith communities, but as UU World magazine pointed out several years ago, UUs are often more welcoming to "geeks" and other fans.  Popular culture, like ancient scripture, should be read with care and discernment if it is to guide us, but sometimes we can find in it reflections of ourselves and our values that enliven our spiritual path.

7/25/2024

This past Sunday morning, our own Jan Harcourt delivered a message as we continue our month of focus on "Play."  Jan shared about some of our UU predecessors, the Unitarian Iowa Sisterhood, drawing on the book Prophetic Sisterhood, Liberal Women Ministers on the Frontier, 1880-1930 by Cynthia Grant Tucker (1990).
