Beyond our own services, we are part of a religious tradition that treats Delight not as a dangerous temptation, but as a sign of the holy, of blessed connection with our neighbors and our world. In the words of John Gibb Millspaugh and Sarah Gibb Millspaugh:
"As we have been blessed, so we bless one another to be a blessing. Breathe in, breathe out, this breath we share with all that breathes. Feel the love of the universe flowing through this community, into you, and out into the universe again. Let the love of all the universe—your love—flow outward, to its height, its depth, its broad extent. You are more than you know, and more beloved than you know. Take up what power is yours to create safe haven, to make of earth a heaven. Give hope to those you encounter, that they may know safety from inner and outer harm, be happy and at peace, healthy and strong, caring and joyful. Be the blessing you already are. That is enough. Blessed Be; Amen." (Adapted from the Karaniya Metta Sutta [Sunna Nipata 1.8] of the Pali Canon.)

Community Events this week:
This Thursday, June 22nd at 6:30 pm, Interfaith Climate Action JCMO meets at First Presbyterian Church (corner of Madison and McCarty). This exciting local group is taking shape as the result of a collaborative effort among members of several local congregations. Interfaith Climate Action JCMO is inviting all members of faith and spiritual communities in Jefferson City who are concerned about climate change and related environmental issues to join them in raising awareness of this issue, as well as influencing habits and policy. The main business for this meeting will be setting the group's priorities for the near future, so a healthy UU presence could mean a lot! Please contact Rich Burdge for more information.
This Thursday, June 22nd at 2 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents: "Japanese Tea Ceremony Demonstration and Tradition." Chado, also known as chanoyu and commonly known in English as the Japanese Tea Ceremony, is a spiritual and aesthetic discipline for refinement of the self. It is known in Japanese as a “do,” a “way.” The word chado means “the way of tea.” This program will feature two practitioners of the Urasenke tea tradition: Liz Pfeiffer and Dean Olson. The Urasenke Foundation is one of the three tea schools which have a direct lineage to tea master Sen Rikyu (1522-1591). Pfeiffer has been studying the tradition of Japanese tea since 2007. In 2019-2020, she lived in Kyoto, Japan, as a student of the Midorikai program at the Urasenke Gakuen Professional College of Chado. She commutes to Lawrence, Kansas, on a monthly basis to continue tea studies and is fortunate to practice with Urasenke-certified tea instructors. She is the lead cataloger at MRRL and will conduct the tea ceremony. Olson is a student and teacher in the Urasenke tea tradition. He has practiced this tradition for more than 25 years. He continues studying tea with other students and his tea instructor in Lawrence, Kansas, and has a background in Japanese art, literature and history. He will discuss the tea ceremony and the history of the tea schools. Registration is limited to 25 for those who would like to sample a bowl of tea. Others are welcome to observe the ceremony. Contact Madeline Matson. For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.
Next Sunday, June 25th at 1:30 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL hosts a Local History Authors Panel. The library and the Historic City of Jefferson co-sponsor a panel discussion with history authors from mid-Missouri, including Jeremy Amick, Michelle Brooks, Dottie Dallmeyer, Gary Elliot, Gary Kremer, Arnold Parks, Bob Priddy, and Walter Schroeder. Moderated by KRCG's Zach Paul. A reception will follow the panel, with the authors' books available for sale and signing. Attendance is free and open to the public. Contact Madeline Matson.
