UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, May 2023
This morning, we wrapped up our month of reflections on "Resistance" with a recent message from our wider UU community. In a sermon titled "Rest Is Resistance: Can I Get An Amen?," Rev. Emilie Boggis drew on the work of "Nap Bishop" Tricia Hersey and others and called us to resist some of the injustice of our society --- by resting. We are surrounded by a "grind culture" that holds our inherent worth and dignity hostage, telling us that only by endless exertion can we earn our worthiness. It tells us that we must constantly be "productive," even as the "productivity" held out to us tramples over the interdependent web of life, our own well-being, and the space and ease we need to be in touch with ourselves and imagine our future. By taking the rest we need and having faith that we deserve it, we can resist this "grind culture" and begin to resist the destructive systems it is a part of. "The times are urgent," Rev. Boggis said; "let us slow down."
