Rootedness

8/23/2021

Sunday morning, we were invited to join our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia for their online services, with a message from Rev. Molly Housh Gordon, who has recently returned from sabbatical.  Rev. Molly focused this morning on rootedness, on being at home in the place where we are.  Most Americans, whether our ancestors came here, were forcibly brought here, or were pushed aside for others, have a generational history of displacement.  If we are not mindful, this can lead us to become alienated from relationship with the web of life around us, and we can suffer an un-named loneliness or act in thoughtless and destructive ways.  To heal ourselves and the world around us, Rev. Molly called us to face our own and our ancestors' history of displacement, to remember those who may have suffered as a result of that history, and to become attentive to the nature around us, to enter into a relationship of reciprocity with it, so that we and the life around us can be renewed together.

The full service is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/Oztavsc3NeI

This week we are resuming Children's Religious Education at our in-person services!  Children are welcome to join Religious Educator Samantha Porter for a lesson in the RE Room during the service hour.  For more details, contact Samantha or our RE Director, Kim Connor.

All are currently welcome to attend services and religious education in person at our building.  Masks are required for everyone attending UUFJC events in-person.  Free masks will be available if you do not have one.

Also note, we are transitioning to a new audio/video system for hybrid in-person and online services, and we’ve been experiencing some bumps along the way.  We appreciate your patience as we learn how to make the new technology work.

If you have a joy or concern that you would like to have read during a service, please submit it by noon on the Friday before through our website: http://uufjc.org/joys--concerns.html
We will also have paper forms available Sunday morning for submissions, and online participants will have an opportunity to share Joys and Concerns via text chat.

The UUFJC board has again updated our Covid-19 policy.  Masks are now required for everyone attending our services or other UUFJC events in person.  Free masks will be available if you do not have one.  For more details, contact our president, Rich Burdge.

Due to the rapidly changing Covid situation, I also encourage anyone planning to attend any of the below-listed events to check with your event organizers and confirm meeting status.

Community Pantry update: due to concerns regarding heat and food safety, we will not have any canned goods in the pantry until September 1.  We still need other nonperishable items, and we can now accept small numbers of books, especially children's books.  For more information, contact Joan Kurtzeborn: [email protected]m.  Reimbursements are available; contact our treasurer, Bob Antweiler: [email protected].

Due to the recent Covid surge, Alberta Mobley and Jan Harcourt's yoga classes at our building are on hold until further notice.  Contact Alberta and Jan for more information.

Community Events this week:

Monday, August 23rd at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library hosts an Author Talk with Michelle Brooks.  Quite a bit has happened in Missouri's capital city since Lewis and Clark passed through the area on their famous journey.  And some of that history has remained hidden.  Being the center of politics in the state and possessing a small-town mindset, the city has a dual identity.  Michelle Brooks, longtime Jefferson City News-Tribune reporter and editor, is a student of the city's history and spent a good number of years on the paper's historic preservation beat.  She will provide a general overview of her new book, Hidden History of Jefferson City.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.
