Our September newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter, Flame on the Water September 2021

Last Sunday, we were joined by local journalist and historian Bob Priddy for a talk about "The Roman Goddess on the Missouri Capitol" --- the statue of Ceres atop the Missouri State Capitol dome.  From its selection and inspiration through to its recent repair and restoration, the statue has a rich and complex history.  Like much American civic sculpture, it presents a goddess not as a religious statement or an object of worship, but as a symbol and an idea --- in this case, the bounty of the earth blessing our state's agriculture and people.

Please note our Social Action Brainstorming session coming this Saturday, September 4th at 10:30 am!  See News and Events below or contact Katherine Connor: connok510@gmail.com.

For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service from August 29 is available to view online: https://youtu.be/JPMMbSwGRlU

Next Sunday,September 5th:
Adult Forum - 9:15 am

"Peace is a Possibility," Betty Cooper

The International Day of Peace is September 21.  Jeremy Gilley worked for five years to finalize a specific calendar day for a worldwide ceasefire day; this legislation was passed and signed by all UN members, September 11, 2001.  Since that time, Gilley asks us: “What we are you going to do on September 21 and throughout the year for peace?”  In the forum, answers to that question will be discussed.

Our Adult Forum is currently available both in-person and via Zoom.

Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am
"Realism Means Being Open to Possibilities," Rev. Mike Adamek

I have never met a pessimist. Even in my moments of darkest depression, I called myself a realist. A self-described realist might say, “Don’t be disappointed, just don’t expect anything good.” However, any realism without also some optimism is truncated. Realism includes hope.
