Take a Breath

8/16/2021

Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued our monthly theme of Healing.  When we are troubled or in pain, at times we might blow on our "ouchies" or heave a sigh in hopes that it will magically go away.  The deep personal and societal hurts we face and the uncomfortable questions of how to live in community together will not vanish, but if we choose the work of deep healing, Rev. Nancy pointed to ways that breath can still support us.  We can take a breath and pause for renewal after a burst of effort.  We can sit with our breath in mindfulness practice, simply being present with where we are and what we feel.  We can take a deep breath before we react from overload and anger and instead remember to value our differences.  And perhaps there is a bit of magic in the healing process as well; there is deep mystery in healing when we breathe into it, or when we feel the universe breathing through us.

For those who would like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service from this morning is available to view online: https://youtu.be/QKsArmmJB0Q --- this week, Rev. Molly Housh Gordon gave her first message after returning from sabbatical.

Community Events this week:

Thursday, August 19th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "FANatics: Inside the Minds of Celebrity Worshipers."  Some people exhibit extreme interest in celebrities to the point of becoming obsessed. Over the past 20 years, the incidence of “celebrity” worship has dramatically increased. The implications of increases in celebrity worship are concerning given research showing that it is associated with undesirable attitudes and behaviors, such as anxiety, depression, obsessive thoughts, suicide attempts, excessive gambling, disordered eating, and difficulty maintaining intimate relationships. Dr. Mara Aruguete, professor of psychology at Lincoln University, will discuss her own and other researchers’ investigations of celebrity culture and its implications.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.
