In the Time of Pandemic
by Kitty O'Meara
And the people stayed home.
And they read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still.
And they listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced.
Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently.
And the people healed.
And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.
And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.
Not everyone has the privilege -- the material, social, and psychological resources -- to paint such a rosy picture, but for those of us who do, it is right to embrace any unique and strange blessings we can find in this difficult and deadly time, to be grateful for them, and use them toward compassion and justice. We must be mindful of those for whom this time is most dangerous and painful so that that awareness can guide us toward those "new choices." But if you can, in this time of enforced withdrawal: meditate without guilt, dance without shame, heal with gratitude --- this can be the path toward healing for all.

This Wednesday, April 8th at 2 pm, Laura Gilkey is hosting a weekly virtual book club for UUFJC members and friends via Zoom. Selected book: Silas Marner by George Eliot. We will be listening to the book with accompanying text during meetings --- there is no "homework;" you do not have to read the book on your own. This week we will listen to chapter 2, or, if enough new people come, we might consider starting over with chapter one (just this once).
