This Thursday, July 25th at 7 pm in the Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents "Life on the Inland Rivers." Guest speaker Sean Visintainer will focus on 18th-and 19th-century river life, from the people who worked on the rivers to the shore-side communities served by flatboats, keelboats and steamboats. Covering the myth and reality of our rivermen, this program will include materials from the Herman T. Pott National Inland Waterways Library, a special collection of the St. Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, curated by Visintainer. Contact Madeline Matson.
Friday, July 26th at 2 pm, MRRL hosts an Author Talk on "Growing Up in World War II Germany." Anneliese Heider Tisdale will describe her family’s life in Germany before and during Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in her memoir, Christmas Trees Lit the Sky. The book’s title refers to the red and green flares used by Allied aircraft during bombing raids on German cities during the war. She was born in Munich and lived there throughout the war; immediately after the war, she worked as an interpreter for the U.S. military government for Bavaria. She later came to the U.S. as a war bride, earned undergraduate and graduate degrees, and taught German and French in junior and senior high schools for 30 years. Contact Madeline Matson.
