The Challenge of Compassion

7/31/2016

This morning we observed our annual Hiroshima Sunday, remembering the anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.  Bob Boldt provided images and Patt Behler shared her experience of visiting Hiroshima years after the event.  Laura Gilkey then delivered a sermon where she warned about the danger, on the one hand, of justifying the bombing with Japan's war guilt, but also on the other hand, the danger of romanticizing the victims as pure and innocent symbols rather than fallible human beings.  To truly live our UU principle and affirm and promote "the inherent worth and dignity of every person," we need to acknowledge guilt and flaws and maintain boundaries while still extending compassion and seeing the sacredness in everyone.
