The Fruits of Liberty

7/4/2016

Sunday morning, on the eve of Independence Day, Rev. Mike explored what fosters a sustainable democracy.  He argued that American Democracy rests on three pillars: Liberty, Equality, and Security.  Many UUs lean more heavily on the Liberty and Equality pillars, and while Security is a necessity, we are in a proud tradition.  Rev. Mike shared with us a metaphor from UU religious educator Sophia Lyon Fahs, saying that democracy is a fruit whose continued flourishing depends on each generation planting its seeds in new ground --- welcoming more people into the circle of our democratic society.  Again and again in US history, we have seen security concerns about the "other" (Catholics, Mormons, Asians, and many more) give way to the flourishing of a more free and equal America.

UUFJC News and Events this week:

We are planning another “This UU Life” service in August on the theme of “Summer.”  Members and friends are invited to write and share reflections or share poetry and readings.  If you’re interested or if you have another idea to contribute, please contact Laura Gilkey by this Wednesday, July 6th.

The UUFJC board is requesting special donations to invest in our Fellowship's growth this year with child care, leadership development, and other initiatives.  For more information or to donate please contact our Treasurer, Bob Antweiler.

We need drivers who can give rides to services once a month to members and friends who need them.  This is an important part of being a welcoming Fellowship, and some of our current volunteer drivers have had situations come up where they could use a break.  Please contact Bob Antweiler if you can help!

We also need Adult Forum leaders for July 10th and July 17th.  Please contact Laura Gilkey.

Sunday evening and today, July 3rd and 4th, Alberta Mobley has offered to clean our carpets.  Many thanks to her!  If you must come to the building at those times, please watch your step.

This Friday, July 8th at 7 pm is the monthly Reader’s Eye Film.  Contact Cinthy Wilcox.

Next Sunday, July 10th at 1:30 pm is the next meeting of our “Examining Whiteness” Anti-Racism workshop.  Contact Katherine Connor and Sharon Morgan.

And coming a week from tomorrow, Monday, July 11th at 7 pm is the monthly UUFJC Lecture Series.  This month, Dr. Debra Green will speak about Lincoln University History.  Contact Frank Rycyk or Carol Bontempo.
