This Sunday, we concluded our monthly focus on Sanctuary with three members' perspectives on where our particular sanctuary, UUFJC, could be headed in the future. All of them hoped for a future of vitality and growth, expanding our sanctuary to embrace new people.
Elizabeth Prenger emphasized the needs of young people, children and their parents, and hoped for renewed child-care as a complement to our Religious Education program, and for ways we can honor youth and young adults.
Jim Davis emphasized leadership development, moving beyond the pressure and scramble to fill offices, and urged us to consider calling a minister for our Fellowship.
Katherine Connor pointed to various ways to broaden our welcome, such as innovative services, revitalized music, and looking beyond Sunday services to ways we can provide community and spiritual support --- sanctuary --- to people who aren't interested in traditional Sunday morning church.
What are your ideas for our Fellowship's path forward? Our board and committees welcome feedback and especially new volunteers! You may also consider coming to our Art and Music Committees' planning party next Sunday --- details below.
Also Sunday morning, UUFJC joyfully welcomed Brian Wekamp as he signed our membership book. Glad to have you with us, Brian!
Next Sunday, November 4th:
Daylight Savings Time Ends
Please remember to set your clocks back Saturday night and enjoy the extra hour of sleep. We hope to see you Sunday morning!
Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"Memory, a Health Restorer," Betty Cooper
It is in the space of memory that we are somehow held together and re-assembled. Examined are excerpts from UUA and Oliver Sacks’ article, “Speak, Memory.”
Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am
Message: "Memory, Imagination, and Deja Vu," Rev. Mike Adamek
When we remember we rewrite our past. Bring any memory to consciousness, and we remake our memories as we cut new neural pathways. The more we remember something, the less accurate it may be. As we gain more and more experience, upon what foundation does our identity lie (pun intended)?
If you have a joy or concern that you would like to have read during the Service, please submit it by noon on Friday through our website: http://uufjc.org/joys--concerns.html

UUFJC Arts Planning Party - 4-6 pm
Our Art and Music Committees invite everyone to an Arts Planning Party! We will unveil some exciting new projects, enjoy entertainment, and plan together for upcoming events. You DO NOT have to be an artist or musician to help! Contact Roberta Dunkel or Patt Behler.
UUFJC News and Events this week:
The November newsletter and print calendar are ready. Paper copies are available in the box on the wall near the coat rack. Electronic copies are available at the links above, or may be requested from the Administrator ([email protected]).
Our annual Memorial Altar is now on display in the Library. We are still accepting remembrances in the form of pictures or favored objects associated with departed loved ones; see the box near the cafe bar. The altar will be up until November 4th with objects and pictures returned November 11th. There will also be a time for mediation this Wednesday, October 31st from 10 pm to 12 pm. If you have any questions, please contact Bob Boldt.
Katherine Connor is gauging interest in a pre-election discussion session to go over this year's ballot initiatives together. If you are interested, contact Katherine: [email protected]
We need someone to step forward and coordinate our Salvation Army meals. The coordinator will have a lot of help learning the ropes and providing the food; the job takes perhaps 3 hours per month. If we don't have a coordinator by the end of this year, we will probably have to give up this longtime community service of our Fellowship. If you are willing to step forward, please contact Roberta Dunkel. (Note, we are not serving at the Salvation Army in November or December due to the holidays.)
The Membership Committee is looking for people willing to give rides to members and friends who can't drive to church on Sundays. We currently have two people needing rides. If you can help, please contact Bob Antweiler.
Please help us update our Members and Friends Directory! Especially if you are relatively new here, we ask you to consider adding your contact information so that it will be available to other members and friends. A paper copy is available for review and you may write updates there, or you can request an electronic copy from Laura Gilkey and e-mail her if you would like your information updated, added, or removed ([email protected]). This will be the last week of the current call for updates, but please remember that you can contact the administrator to update your directory information at any time.
This Thursday, November 1st, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America meets in our building at 7 pm. Contact Susan Randolph.
This Friday, November 2nd, our building is reserved by a community group starting at 6:30 pm. Please allow privacy.
Community Events this week:
This Friday, November 2nd at 7 pm, Missouri River Regional Library presents its First Friday Film: "Goodbye Christopher Robin." This film provides a glimpse into the relationship between author A.A. Milne, creator of the beloved Winnie-the-Pooh stories, and his young son, Christopher Robin. The international success of the books that enchanted the world came at a cost to the author, his son and his wife. Contact Madeline Matson. For more library programs visit MRRL.org.
This week, Capitol City Cinema presents "Colette" (Thursday through Sunday). For showtimes, more events, and more information, visit capitolcitycinema.org.
