UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, May 2023
This morning, we held our Annual Business meeting. In their reports, our officers and committee chairs reflected on how far we've come this year: we've bounced back from Covid, welcomed intern minister George Grimm-Howell, and welcomed back Rev. Nancy TannerThies. We also remain committed to making our services accessible through Zoom, although it continues to be a bumpy process. Our president, Rich Burdge, offered thanks to all our members, supporters, volunteers, ministers, and staff who have made it possible.
The speakers at the meeting also pointed to ways volunteers could help move our Fellowship even further. Member relations, building management, social action coordination, and assisting the treasurer are major ways to help, but there are many more opportunities as well. You could deliver readings, light candles, or moderate at our Sunday services (don't worry --- it's not hard and we're a friendly audience!). You can provide a discussion topic for our Adult Forum. You could join the Art Committee to help display creativity in our building, or the Caring Committee to support members and friends in need.
Or if you're really committed, you could serve on a future UUFJC board. Toward the end of the meeting, we announced our nominating committee for next year: Katherine Connor, Joan Kurtzeborn, and Frank Rycyk. If you are interested in serving on our board in the future, contact one of them.
We thank you all for being part of our Fellowship, and we hope for another great year together!
For those who would like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service from this morning is available to view online:

Community Events this week:
Next Sunday, May 21st at 2 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "Keep It Old-Time—Fiddle Music in Missouri from the 1960s Folk Music Revival to the Present." Since its evolution in Europe centuries ago, the fiddle/violin has become a true “people’s instrument” that spans most of the globe. Whether called violin or fiddle (the same instrument, just with differing customs of learning and performance), it continues to be enjoyed across all kinds of traditions and communities. “Keep it old-time” is a familiar phrase that echoes many fiddlers’ preference for carrying on inherited tunes and styles of former times, but most musicians learn from many sources and influences and appreciate different styles. This program offers some live examples of Missouri fiddling and dance music and includes discussion about the history and people of the fiddle. The presenter, Howard Marshall, is professor emeritus and former chair of art history and archaeology and director of the Missouri Cultural Heritage Center at the University of Missouri. He will be accompanied by his old friends Heinrich Leonhard and Kathy Gordon, and special guests John P. Williams, Rachel Krause, and Robert Makey. Marshall’s new book, the final book in his trilogy about fiddlers, will be available at the program, along with the first volumes. Each book includes a companion music CD of archival and contemporary recordings of fiddlers discussed in the book. Contact Madeline Matson. For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.
