UUFJC Newsletter, Flame on the Water, November 2023
I did not hear the message myself, but Rev. Nancy's title reminds me that some of us were taught the virtue of Generosity in an unhealthy, self-denying way: that giving was virtuous and "taking" was selfish. The wonder of Generosity, however, is part of a much more complex, lively, and interdependent flow that embraces giving but also receiving and self-care. A proper response to the needs of others is to be open to giving while respecting your own needs. A proper response to gifts from others is to be open to their generosity and capability while respecting your own need to choose what you bring into your life. Giving and receiving are not a black and white duality, but a complex and many-hued tapestry that binds us to each other, echoing the interdependent web of life we are embedded in.
