Message: "Seven Types of Ambiguity in Mathematics," Don Love
In Seven Types of Ambiguity, William Empson examined how poets use ambiguity to free readers to ponder hidden meanings. As a teacher, I noticed that students found math imponderable because of ambiguities teachers never notice. The fact that one half and one divided by two are written the same way (1/2) reminds a teacher that mathematics is a harmonious whole, but is a source of insecurity to an Eighth Grader. Mathematicians, however, became very uncomfortable when Kurt Gödel proved mathematical systems could not be both compete and consistent. If we have the right frame of mind, ambiguity allows us to appreciate the freedom inherent in our world.
