Why the Caged Bird Sings

3/14/2016

Sunday morning, we continued our observance of Women's History Month.  Joanna Babb read a poem by Maya Angelou, and Alexis Engelbrecht began her sermon by reminding us of the strictures faced by creative women in the past.

Alexis also pointed out that even as we gain outward freedom, we can still be imprisoned by subtler mental and spiritual limitations.  These limitations, theological or secular, form "a bad religion" that "brings us to our knees," to paraphrase a Frank Ocean song.  Instead, Alexis encouraged each of us to find our inner heart of strength and remember that "Unitarian Universalism is not a faith in which one kneels – it asks us to stand, and to walk – to live out our values and potential and to support others to do the same."

UUFJC News and Events this week:

Our annual pledge drive has begun!  If you are on our Yahoo!Group or weekly-email list, you should have received a letter from our Treasurer, Bob Antweiler, in your e-mail with an attached pledge form.  If you haven't received it but would like to contribute to the Fellowship, please contact us!  See Bob if you have any questions.  Thank you to everyone who pledges; this is a huge help to us in planning for the coming year!

If you need a report of your pledges and contributions for the past year or have any other questions about that, please contact our assistant Treasurer, Don Love.

We are working on updating our Members & Friends Directory; please let us know if you want your contact information updated, added, or removed.  There is a paper copy of the Directory in the back where you can note changes, or contact Laura Gilkey.

We need Adult Forum leaders for April.  Contact Laura Gilkey.

Monday, March 14th, is the monthly UUFJC Lecture Series.  Our own Dr. Ruth Robertson, retired Professor of Vocal Music at Lincoln University, will speak on Classical vocal music composed by women.  Contact Carol Bontempo or Frank Rycyk.

The American Association of University Women meets this Thursday, March 17th at 7 pm at the Fellowship.  See Charlotte Parsons for more information.

Next Sunday, March 20th is the monthly Laughter Yoga session at 4 pm.  Free and open to all.  See Jan Harcourt.

And don't forget our annual business meeting coming May 15th.  A list of our voting members for this year is now posted on the bulletin board in the back of the sanctuary.  See Bob Antweiler if you have any questions.

Community Events this week:

This Tuesday, March 15th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents "Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research."  Allyson Campbell, representing the Greater Missouri Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, will offer a program for adults of all ages looking for information on ways to age as well as possible.  She will provide information about current research (what we know) and practical strategies (what we can do) in the areas of cognitive activity, physical health and exercise, diet and nutrition, and social engagement.  This program is part of a series co-sponsored by MRRL and the Greater Missouri Alzheimer’s Association.  Contact Madeline Matson.

This Wednesday, March 16th, Citizens Climate Lobby presents two free screenings of the documentary film "Merchants of Doubt," 6 pm and 8 pm at Capitol City Cinema.  Inspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway, MERCHANTS OF DOUBT takes audiences on a satirically comedic, yet illuminating ride into the heart of American spin. Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the curtain on a secretive group of charismatic pundits-for-hire who present themselves in the media as scientific authorities – yet have the contrary aim of spreading confusion about well-studied public threats ranging from toxic chemicals to pharmaceuticals to climate change. This showing is hosted by Citizens’ Climate Lobby.  Contact: [email protected]

This Thursday, March 17th at 7 pm, Columbia Area NOW meets at the Hy-Vee Restaurant at Broadway and Fairview in Columbia.  Non-members and new members are welcome.  Contact Sue Gibson.

This week, Capitol City Cinema presents "Only Yesterday" (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).  This personal and reflective film is a long-neglected gem by the animation masters at Japan's Studio Ghibli.  For showtimes and more information, visit capitolcitycinema.org.
