Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of Hope.  Hope, properly practiced, can keep us going and working toward a better future even in the face of all the hurt and terror we see in the world, but how does one properly practice hope?  Where is the owner's manual?  Rev. Nancy shared one draft of such a manual, which concluded Barbara Kingsolver's commencement address at Duke University, and Rev. Nancy offered her own suggestions, too, as we find our own way of working with hope.  First, as Kingsolver noted, hope needs constant repair and adjustment.  It also requires us to not just wait for rescue but to make the hard climb toward what we hope for.  We must engage with others in that effort, including others we don't at first see as likely partners.  Sometimes we will have to ignore the voices of dominant opinion or "reasonableness" and stick to our own intuition.  We will have to nurse our hope along through periods of doubt with whatever helpful balms we can find.  And sometimes --- sometimes --- we will find that it is time to let go and build new hopes all over again.

Also note, our board has approved a new Covid-19 policy.  Due to the recent surge in Missouri, masks are required at in-person services for those not fully vaccinated against Covid-10, and masks are strongly recommended for everyone.  Free masks will be available if you do not have one.  We are also trying to improve the distancing of our seating arrangement.  For more details, contact our president, Rich Burdge.

Monday, July 19th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: A-Maizing Origins: The Archaeology of Corn.  From food and drink to fuel and manufactured goods, corn is crucial to helping make our lives easier (and tastier). This staple was created through artificial selection and breeding by early indigenous populations in modern-day Mexico, and more recent archaeological evidence has shed light on the complex development of corn. Sunday we shared a message from Liz James & Rev. Anne Barker, founders of the Unitarian Universalist Hysterical Society.  Some of our members have long enjoyed the Hysterical Society's humorous Facebook posts, but humor is not just a diversion.  Too often, we are trained to hide our emotions: our loud laughs, our messy tears.  Women can be particularly pressured to seek calm and peace at any cost and disparaged as "hysterical" if they let their emotions burst out.  But a spiritual home, James & Barker argued, should be a place where all of who we are is welcome, where shared covenant -- and yes, shared humor --- connect us, where we are accepted "cracks" and all so that we can "hatch" into the people we were meant to be.

This Tuesday, July 13th at 11 am, A subgroup of a Jefferson City homelessness working group holds its monthly meeting; this subgroup is focused on responding to emergency housing needs.  For more on getting involved with this or other aspects of the homelessness working group, contact Patt Behler.

This Wednesday, July 14th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents a program on Lincoln University’s Police Training Academy.  Police departments across the country are seeing fewer applicants for open positions brought about by large numbers of officers retiring and those simply leaving the force. With these concerns in mind, Gary Hill, Lincoln University’s police chief, developed the first police academy at a Historically Black College and University. LU’s new program has received national news attention with Chief Hill being featured on television programs in in a recent Time magazine article. Chief Hill will discuss how the Academy came into being, what he hopes to accomplish with his recruits, the response from police departments, and future plans for this important program.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

Sunday morning, relating Independence Day to our Fifth Principle, Rev. Adamek talked about attempts to give democracy away in our country, past and present. He pointed out current examples from the state and federal levels, and their dissonant nature, with democratic values and with each other. But he also noted that such conflicts are not new. The framers of our Constitution represented a wide array of conflicting interests and ideas, and resolved them in debate that was often highly contentious and not always amicable. But in the end, they tended to settle issues based on common general principles, as we have done, at our best, throughout our history. In this spirit, he called on us all to reaffirm our own basic values of truth, honesty, kindness, humility, and wisdom, in order to best benefit our communities, our country, and the human race.

Sunday morning, we were invited to join Unitarian Universalists from all over our country and world as the UU Association wrapped up its annual General Assembly with a special online worship service.  The service was led by the First Universalist Church of Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Members and clergy young and old offered reflections on how easily the times we live in can break our hearts, how we pray and hope for a brighter future, but praying and hoping is not enough.  In the words of a reading by Theresa I Soto, "Everything is still on fire.  ...  In addition to living, it is clear that --- fire or not --- you must level-up in what it means to thrive."  How can we level up beyond small dreams that only tinker with the lines that divide us?  How can we level-up beyond paternalistic concern for the underprivileged to honor their self-chosen escapes into freedom and build a world they could happily return to?  How can we level up beyond avoiding discomfort and into engaging with compassion and joy?  Are we as a nation and as a faith ready to become who love calls us to be?  What will be our next step into that new level of thriving?

Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies joined us to continue exploring our monthly theme of Play.  Rev. Nancy defined play as things we do freely, not because of necessity or practical benefit but for their own sake.  But "aimless frolic," while important, is not all there is to play.  Play is necessary as a form of learning, and what Rev. Nancy termed "deep play" can lead us into selfless transcendence.  At times we are blocked from play and especially deep play because it can be so impractical; we face risks of embarrassment, discomfort, sometimes even injury, in return for gains that are not obvious.  Play is accident prone --- but, Rev. Nancy said, "Enlightenment is an accident."  And fortunately, opportunities for play are almost always close at hand.

Monday, June 21st at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents an Author Talk by Kathy Schrenk, author of Katy Trail: A Guided Tour Through History.  Registration required; audience limited to 25.  Much of the Katy Trail parallel the Missouri River, placing trail users squarely in the footsteps of Daniel Boone’s late-in-life frontier explorations and the first stretch of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The first rails of the MKT—or Missouri-Kansas-Texas—Railroad were laid in the 1860s, but more than a century later, when the MKT owners were set to retire the rail line, cyclists and preservationists conceived the country’s longest Rails to Trails project now stretching 237 miles. Author Kathy Schrenk started riding the rail trails of the Midwest with her aunt and uncle as soon as she was old enough to pedal. She has worked as a newspaper reporter and magazine writer for 25 years. While living in California for more than a decade, she became an experienced cyclist and outdoorswoman. In 2013, she returned to the Midwest, determined to find the best outdoor experiences the region had to offer. She started and leads a social media hiking group for families that has more than 2000 members. Her first book, Best Hikes with Kids: St. Louis and Beyond, was released in 2018. Wednesday, June 23rd at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "Marijuana: Just the Facts."  Registration required; audience limited to 25.  The legalization of marijuana is picking up steam in the United States. Proponents tout the medicinal benefits of the substance. Opponents assert the dangers. How do we know fact from fiction when it comes to marijuana? Participants in this presentation will learn the physical, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive effects of marijuana in the body based on neuroscience. We will NOT say “Drugs are bad,” “Marijuana is a cure-all” or debate the issue. It’ll be “Just the Facts,” presented by Dr. James M. Sunday morning, we were invited to join our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia for online services with a message from their sabbatical minister, Rev. Dr. C. W. Dawson.  As Rev. Dawson reflected, June is an exciting month: it's Pride Month for the LGBTQIA+ community; it's the month of Juneteenth, commemorating Black Americans' emancipation from slavery; and it is also Black Music Month.  Rev. Dawson took the occasion to share four spiritually significant qualities of Black Music that are open to all people:

• Black Music has a Beat.  It expresses the rhythm of life that calls us toward wholeness.
• Black Music is about Identity: Even when you feel invisible and powerless, Black Music says that you are somebody, and that you are part of a power for justice larger than yourself.
• Black Music lifts up Improvisation: Amid the changes of life, we all need the ability to be flexible and spontaneous, to engage with the moment --- to improvise.
• And Black Music teaches that our Condition is Not our Conclusion: We may feel ourselves in difficult times now.  The Black Music tradition was formed out of many difficult times of slavery and oppression and still sings out belief that faith, right action, and sacred power will bring us to a better world.

Tuesday, June 15th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness: Recognizing the Signs and How to Minimize Risk."  Registration required; audience limited to 25.  Join Joe Pallikkathayil and Christa Roehl as they discuss the 10 signs of Alzheimer’s and how to minimize risk, as well as community activities that spread awareness of this devastating disease. Joe is an employee of the Alzheimer’s Association and serves as manager of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s for Jefferson City, Lake of the Ozarks and Rolla. He also manages The Longest Day for the Greater Missouri Chapter and is a part-time caregiver to his father who is living with dementia. Christa has been a volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association for five years, chairing the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Awareness Day, and advocating on both the state and federal level to help those touched by the disease.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

Sunday morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin our theme for June: Play.  Rev. Adamek talked about the important spiritual value of play as a path to spiritual re-creation, above and beyond simple relaxation. It is an active act of participation, requiring imagination and creativity, that involves losing oneself by connecting to something worthwhile. It is a type of communion that brings joy and results in a gain of energy. He talked about the importance of play in a balanced spiritual life, and afterward, we discussed the role and importance of play in our own lives..

Don't forget: UUFJC's annual Rummage Sale will be returning this coming Saturday, June 12th from 7 am to noon!  Please be on the lookout for gently-used items you can donate to support our Fellowship; storage space at our building is available.  We also need extra tables if you have any you can lend, and lots of volunteers for setup, sale day, and cleanup.  All this week, our building is reserved for sale setup and other events there will be on hold   If you have items stored at the Fellowship that are not intended for sale, please take them home or label them clearly (we have had accidents before).  For more on donating and getting involved with the sale, contact Bob Antweiler ([email protected]) and Lisa Sanning ([email protected]).

Sunday morning, we were invited to join our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia for online services.  Sabbatical minister Rev. Dr. C. W. Dawson addressed the theme of character, not the "characters" who appear in our fictional stories, but the "character" of thought and action through which we build the stories of our lives and, bit by bit, the story of our world.  Rev. Dawson cited the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, who believed that our character was our own to develop, that we needed good teachers who embodied virtue, and that virtue began with action, which could lead to habit, which could in turn form our character.  In our times it can seem challenging to find people to look up to who embody virtue and to take right actions, but we are called to this work.  As Rev. Dawson said, a recommitment to character, to acting in accordance with our shared divinity and the importance of every person, can help to heal the fissures of racism, discrimination, and violence that wound our society.

Sunday morning, during a brief service, our outgoing president Katherine Connor shared reflections on our Unitarian Universalist principle of democracy, and how religious organizations can support a democratic society.  When people don't have tools to make meaning of the world, they become vulnerable to the promises of totalitarian leaders.  However, "mature" non-dogmatic faith communities like ours can provide a healthy framework for finding meaning and coming together in our differences, both within congregations and across diverse organizations.

After the service, we held our Annual Business Meeting.  Key points raised included:

• Our building is now open for in-person attendance; masks are optional for those who are fully vaccinated, required for those who are not.
• We have budgeted extra money to upgrade our audio-visual technology, and we hope to offer hybrid in-person/online services soon and continue them indefinitely.
• We hope to resume in-person Religious Education, perhaps this fall.
• We have also budgeted more for outreach to support our Salvation Army Meals and Community Pantry and generally make a difference for the community beyond our walls.

We are not holding UUFJC services this week.  However, our building will be open for those who wish to gather in person and share the online services of our neighbor congregation, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia (see below).  When coming to our building in person, masks are optional for those who are fully vaccinated against covid-19; for those who are not fully vaccinated, masks are required.

Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of Story.  Even if we are not fiction fans, humans by default make meaning out of life by organizing it into stories.  These stories can help us find a path through a complicated and chaotic world, but Nancy suggested we be careful what paths we create and follow in this way.  Just notice, she said, what kinds of stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, about others, and about the transcending mysteries of existence.  Do we tell stories of redemption or contamination?  Of transformation and potential or of hopelessness?  With our stories, do we empower ourselves or blame ourselves?  Where do our stories push others to the margins?  How do the stories we tell change over time?  Rev. Nancy called on each of us to notice how our stories construct the past and lead us to build the future.

Also please note: UUFJC's Annual Business Meeting is coming in one week, next Sunday, May 23rd after Services.  The agenda, voter list, and last year's minutes are available on request.  The Agenda is also included in the May Newsletter.  In this way we are trying to honor our commitment to post this information in advance of the meeting while adapting to our current mostly-online operations and respecting voting members' privacy.  You can request the documents from [email protected] or contact Katherine Connor at [email protected] with questions or concerns.
