This morning, on the last Sunday of 2021, many of us came together after a series of ups and downs to share holiday memories.  This has been another difficult year, but both longtime members and new friends have continued to come together in our Fellowship thanks to all of your sharing and commitment.  We deeply thank you, and we look forward to making new memories as our journey together continues in 2022!

Help empower human rights: We are currently holding our annual Guest At Your Table fundraiser to support the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.  UUSC empowers grassroots partners to work for human rights around the world.  Stories from UUSC's work, donation boxes, and donation envelopes are available at our building, or you can learn more about UUSC's work and give online: https://www.uusc.org/.  Donations made through our Fellowship will be due in late January.

Free community pantry: Building Community Bridges has been generous in sharing food for our pantry, and we are grateful. Some items we could use more of are: canned chicken, any sauce or canned meal that includes protein, boxed cereal (both cold and oatmeal types), hot chocolate, coffee, and seasonings.  We can always use items for cold weather such as stocking hats, scarves, and water/snow resistant gloves.  We are out of diapers, clothing, and dish detergents. Thank you for your generosity.  Remember: no glass containers or expired items, please.  For more information about the pantry and current needs, contact Joan: j[email protected].  Reimbursements are available; contact our treasurer, Bob Antweiler: [email protected].

This morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of "Opening to Joy."  The way Christmas decorations and sales seem to creep earlier and earlier each year reveals our eagerness for joy, but often our pains and discomforts loom larger in our consciousness, and our attempts to comfort ourselves are self-defeating.  Joy comes in moments, often simple, ordinary ones.  Rev. Nancy recommended these resources compiled by Betty Cooper for our own Adult Forum, and she also pointed out how ancient wisdom stories of the winter holidays point to simple ways of opening to joy.  The story of Hanukkah, when one night's oil burned for eight nights, reminds us of the joy of finding we have more resources than we thought.  The Christmas story of shepherds and wise men reminds us of the joy of encountering unexpected mystery and the joy of the search for knowledge.  Earth-centered spiritualities' stories of Yule remind us of the joy of natural cycles.  Let us remember to open ourselves up to these joys, during the present holidays and always.

Monday, December 20th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "Route 66: Missouri’s Mother Road."  Missouri enjoys a special place in Route 66 history, folklore and culture. This film celebrates the unique heritage of a beloved road, with highlights of a trip from St. Louis to Joplin with stops along the way. Sunday, December 12
This morning, we were welcomed to join in online services with our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia as they celebrated their successful accessibility capital campaign.  Through readings, recordings, and reflections by UUCC members, they brought forth the voices of people with disabilities about inclusion as spiritual practice.  The abled among us must work on our own discomfort and educate ourselves to not just hear people with disabilities but meet them in community.  True inclusion is not just tinkering around the edges of what already is to "check the box" of accessibility.  True inclusion means basing our efforts on radical love to create places where all can engage with each other in sacred space.

Sunday, December 5

This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin our month of reflections on "Opening to Joy." Joy, Rev. Mike said, cannot be manufactured; it always comes as a surprise, but we can open ourselves to welcome those surprises when they come.  If we harden ourselves because of our hurts so that we will never be surprised by pain, we harden ourselves against being surprised by joy as well.  In Rev. Mike's experience, joy is a vivid, intense feeling that comes when we recognize a positive connection to something greater than ourselves.  This recognition can come through doing --- or witnessing --- virtuous actions, through awe at the power and grandeur of nature, or through connection and love with family and friends.  However joy comes to us, we must allow ourselves the vulnerability of expecting joy in order to open ourselves to its life-giving surprises.

Tuesday, December 7th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "Black Culture in White Spaces: Experiences of Students Attending Rural HBCUs."  This talk will feature Dr. Rick Brewer, assistant professor of communication studies in the Department of Humanities and Communications. He will discuss the tensions and struggles inherent to the social and relationship lives of students of color attending historically Black colleges or universities (HBCUs) in geographic and cultural areas marked by whiteness and political conservatism. Findings and discussion presented originate from a larger research project examining these issues by conducting interviews with students who narrate their experiences navigating and negotiating a life rich with complexity, contradiction and collaboration.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

This morning, we celebrated our annual Bread Communion.  The sharing of bread is a timeless symbol of welcome and mutual support.  Bread that is "broken" fulfills its highest purpose, opening up to provide nourishment.  Our hearts, too, fulfill their highest purpose when they are "broken" open to bless the world and the people around us.

This Friday, December 3rd at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents their monthly First Friday Film: "Here Today."  Veteran comedy writer Charlie Burnz (Billy Crystal) forms an unlikely yet hilarious and touching friendship with New York lounge singer Emma Payge (Tiffany Haddish). Emma unexpectedly wins a lunch with the comedy legend, but their relationship gets off to an extremely rocky start. Before long, each finds in the other a sort of soulmate, forging a deep bond in a story of friendship across generations. The film is based on Alan Zweibel's short story, "The Prize." This morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of "Holding History."  The past looms large in our minds.  We use memory not only to know where we've been but to choose and justify where we are now and where we want to go.  The past is never just past, and Rev. Nancy suggested the following steps for navigating the dance of past and present:

1. Show Up.  As much as you can, commit the energy to be fully present to this day and its ever-shifting possibilities.
2. Gather and Hold.  Curiously gather as much memory as you can about what brought you to this moment.  Stay interested beyond what you want to be true.  Get a feel for what to hang onto and what to let go of.
3. Evaluate.  Reflect on the past using the best standards you know.  The UU Principles are a good starting point for many, but notice and be honest about what really matters to you.
4. Finally, Act.  When we act on the best knowledge we hold, it is never perfect, but life is always impermanent and imperfect, and still we are called to engage.  When we act, we create new history to hold going forward, and through this cycle we find our way forward.

Tomorrow, Monday, November 22nd at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "The Silencing of Generational Trauma: Black Female Students and Gender-Based Violence in College."  In 2011, the Obama Administration initiated long-overdue conversations around campus-based sexual violence, gender-based discrimination and sexual harassment. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 requires schools (K-12 and higher education) to develop, communicate, and implement policies and practices to respond to and prevent gender-based discrimination. Over the last 10 years, more and more students have found the courage to speak up regarding their peers’ experiences and experiences of their own. However, Black female students are among the population least likely to report incidents, seek help or name their offender. Zakiya Brown is a doctoral student at Northcentral University and dean of students and Title IX coordinator at Lincoln University. Sunday service, November 14

Last Sunday we joined our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia as Rev. Molly Housh Gordon gave a message titled "Political Theology For This Moment."  Often we try to divorce matters of politics and theology, but all of our political acts reflect our values and faith, and all of our faith commitments impact the world and society around us.  Trying to declare a neutral "secular" sphere often just normalizes the status quo and entrenches existing power structures.  So how can we lovingly and responsibly approach faith and politics together?  Rev. Molly suggested that we pay attention to what our actions reflect "worship" of.  Does it align with the values we profess and want to express?  On the other hand, our values must pass the test of practical results.  If we live out those values, what kind of world do they create?  Do they create flourishing, diversity, and beloved community?  Do they create the world we want to create?  What are we worshipping, and what is that worship bringing about?

Community Events this week:

​This Saturday, November 20th at 1:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "French Fiddle Tunes and Tall Tales: The French Creole Story."  Fiddler and cultural historian Dennis Stroughnatt became acquainted with the historically French Creole community of Old Mines, Missouri, as a student three decades ago and learned the community’s music and folklore from its tradition-bearers. He is now recognized as one of the foremost experts of French Creole culture of North America, especially that of the old Illinois Country (encompassing much of present-day Illinois, Missouri and Indiana). He has made numerous recordings and received awards from national cultural institutions. Via 300-year-old songs and stories, this program will take the listener on a fascinating rip through the French Creole history of Missouri from both a historical and cultural perspective and will highlight the enduring French identity of places like Ste. ​Sunday Service, November 7

Rev. Mike Adamek began exploring our monthly theme for November: "Holding History."  Holding history can be a challenge for UUs as many of us are non-Christians committing to a tradition with Christian roots.  Rev. Mike has experienced this as a religious humanist, but shared three waypoints of our Judeo-Christian heritage that he can still embrace:

• Covenant: Building our faith around promises that we cannot fulfill perfectly but that bring us into relationship both with the divine and with other people.
• Mystery: While ideas like the trinity may not make rational sense to all of us, they can still be understood as something like Buddhist koans, profound ideas meant to get us past our ego's need to make sense of things.
• Forebears: Earlier Christian movements like 16th-century Socinianism also emphasized reason and individual conscience, and for this they were often persecuted and denied recognition as being religion at all.  When questions of religious tolerance emerge in our own day, we should remember and hold this history.

Sunday, October 31st service

This morning, we were joined by Christhia Castro of El Puente Hispanic Ministry to talk about her organization and about the Day of the Dead holiday.

"El Puente" means "The Bridge."  Although the organization has Catholic roots and a Christian mission, they offer their services to Spanish-speaking people of all faiths.  Through language interpretation and other services, they help Hispanic people thrive and connect in the Jefferson City area.

Castro also offered a timely presentation on the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead (although Castro is not Mexican herself).  Practices going back to Aztec times have mingled with Catholicism, protest art, and modern sensibilities into a vibrant tradition.  Castro emphasized that the holiday is not a celebration of death, but a celebration of the lives of loved ones who have passed.  Day of the Dead altars, parades, and other festivities keep the departed alive in memory and welcome their spirits to visit those who still love them.

Our building is reserved by community groups Wednesdays and Saturdays starting at 6 pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 5:30 pm.  If you have access to our building, please allow privacy at these times.

This Thursday, November 4th at 7 pm is the monthly meeting of the local chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.  For meeting information, contact Susan Randolph.

This Friday, November 5th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents their monthly First Friday Film.  This month's selection: "12 Angry Men."  This classic 1957 film deals with issues still relevant today in its portrayal of jurors in a murder case against a teenager accused of killing his father. The twelfth juror stands out in his belief of the defendant's innocence. Leading the powerhouse cast are Henry Fonda, Lee J. Cobb, Ed Begley and Jack Klugman.
