October 25th, 2021

10/25/2021

Highlights:
  • Our 30th Anniversary Celebration was a big success. Thanks to Gennifer Monteer and Lauraine Connelly for these photos! See our Facebook page for more photos of the event.
  • Coming up: Walk the Vote, Saturday, October 30, Community Park, 1-3. Help with our table!
  • Coming up: Day of the Dead service on October 31
On Sunday, October 24, we gathered to celebrate 30 years of UUFJC!  Thankfully, the weather was very cooperative, and we had a good turnout at the park.  In her message, Katherine Connor reflected on the history of our church as constantly evolving, as the history of human enterprise. She was able to have a unique perspective on UUFJC's history, but she surely spoke for all of us when she spoke of how the Fellowship has taught her, challenged her beliefs, enriched her life, and supported her in love. 176 people have signed the membership book since UUFJC was formed 30 years ago, and even though some of them have died or moved away, that's a lot of lives that we have touched, and that have touched ours. Looking forward, she expressed that her greatest hope for the Fellowship was that it continue with new people making changes, so that we hardly recognize anything anymore, because each day, our church is born anew.  (Summary by Rich Burdge)

For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their sermon from today is available to view online: https://youtu.be/LnHr6IciI_0

"Day of the Dead," Cristhia Castro, Executive Director, El Puente Hispanic Ministry
Castro's message about this Mexican holiday will include a temporary Day of the Dead altar in the UU Sanctuary. This altar will include photos of deceased loved ones.  UUFJC members and friends are invited to participate: bring photos of loved ones who have passed away. We will provide a box for these photos near the cafe bar. They will be collected the morning of the service to be placed on the altar.  You may recover your photos, which will be returned to the box, after the service.  You may wish to label them.  Due to Covid, there will be no fiesta as we had originally hoped. El Puente will provide prewrapped Mexican sweet rolls (conchas).
For more about El Puente, visit elpuentemo.org.

Community Events this week:
Tomorrow, Monday, October 25th at 6 pm, Faith Voices for Jefferson City holds its monthly assembly.  This month's meeting is hybrid i.e. virtual and in-person. Did you know there is an election on November 2, 2021? There is a proposed sales tax increase to fund public safety. Join the Town Hall on Monday at the Joshua House Church 1136 E. Dunklin at 6:00 p.m. in person or online to hear from the Public Safety Commission and the community about what the tax does and what the impact will be on the public, so you can make an informed decision at the ballot box. Register for the in- person meeting and the online meeting at this link. Masks required for in-person attendees.

Also tomorrow evening, Monday, October 25th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library hosts: "Elderhood: A Discussion and Conversation."  Most people alive today will spend more years in elderhood than in childhood, and many will be elders for 40 years or more. Even though humans are living longer than ever before, we've made old age into a disease, a condition to be dreaded, denigrated, neglected and denied. Harvard-trained geriatrician Louise Aronson's Pulitzer-nominated book Elderhood is the subject of a discussion and conversation that invites participants to consider how aging and ageism affects popular culture, medical treatment and societal attitudes. The discussion will be coordinated by Mary Schantz, who has long experience in public policy regarding aging issues, Dr. Nancy Ellis-Ordway, psychologist and author of Thrive at Any Weight and whose academic research focuses on body image, and Madeline Matson, the library's adult programmer.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Tuesday, October 26th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents the latest installment in the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "The Importance of Learning a Foreign Language."  Have you ever wondered why it is easier for children to learn a foreign language than adults? How can the learning of foreign languages be advantageous for students and other adults? Sometimes knowing a foreign language can be a matter of life or death, depending on the situation. The benefits of learning a foreign language pertain to careers, more cultural awareness, study abroad opportunities, meeting new people and improvement in learning skills. Gloria Williams, assistant professor at LU, will share how she learned Spanish, French, German, Swedish, English, Japanese and Patois when she lived in Sweden, Spain, Germany, Jamaica, the USA, and the impact this has had in her life and career.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Celebrating 30 Years!

10/18/2021

On Sunday, October 17, those who gathered at our building shared a recently recorded UUCC service in which Rev. Molly Housh Gordon spoke on "Unitarian Theology for This Moment."  In the 1800s, Rev. William Ellery Channing's landmark sermon "Unitarian Christianity" defined an emerging religious movement.  While many UUs today would not identify with Channing's Christian framework, many of the Unitarian qualities he highlighted still resonate:
  • A rational approach to truth and spirituality
  • An anti-hierarchical respect for individual conscience
  • An optimistic view of human nature that sees divine potential in all

Especially in challenging times like ours, it still matters to be clear-eyed about reality, but to envision ourselves as worthy and capable of making ourselves and the world better.  Although none of us fully lives up to that divine potential, seeing that spark in each other opens us up to living in relationship and basing our faith on relationship and covenant rather than dogma.  We need that relationship --- we need to come together --- to move the world we see toward the beautiful future we dream of and commit to.

The sermon is available to view online: https://youtu.be/a7PTexnw6pw

Cultivating a Faith Community

10/11/2021

Last Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued our monthly theme of Cultivating Relationship with thoughts on how to cultivate the special relationship that is a shared faith community.  Rev. Nancy identified three ways people can identify with a church: through how we behave together, what we believe together, and through a sense of belonging.  As UUs our tradition of belief centers on freedom, reason, and tolerance.  Through this, many of us feel a sense of belonging, of being accepted and supported while being free to be our authentic selves.  How we behave matters in fostering that belonging and relationship: how do our actions connect us together?  How can we behave with thoughtfulness toward the needs of others?  How can we take responsibility for our freedom and be open to the challenges and insights that come from being open to others in relationship?

If you would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, the sermon from their October 10th service is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/qnC6RADvjQ4

October 5, 2021

10/5/2021

This past Sunday, Rev. Mike Adamek began exploring our monthly theme for October: Cultivating Relationship.  In relationship we seek mutual support and nourishment with others in our lives through mutual awareness and respect.  Rev. Mike suggested three practices that can help us cultivate this:
  • Honesty: Resist lying to others and, hardest of all, to ourselves.  Face our pain rather than hiding from it, and be willing to realize when we have caused pain to others.
  • Empathy: Show genuine interest in others, listen to them, and be willing to accept their gifts without internal drama about how to even the score.
  • Fidelity: Be more loyal to the people in our lives than to our own desires --- respect those places that others can't go with you, the places where relationship cannot be cultivated.

In-Between Times

9/28/2021

Important notes:
  • No Thursday Happy Hour on Zoom this week
  • It's time to update our Members and Friends Directory! Details below
  • Our October newsletter is now ready to view or download: UUFJC Newsletter "Flame on the Water" October 2021

Last Sunday we were invited to share the online services of our neighbor congregation, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia.  In her sermon, Rev. Molly Housh Gordon pointed out that we are in an in-between time.  In the cycle of the year, the past week saw the harvest moon and the autumnal equinox.  In the covid pandemic, we are seemingly between the worst of it and the end.  In current events, we are between the disruption and the resolution.  Our brains hate this in-between-ness and crave clarity and predictability.  At the same time, our spirits may be drawn to the possibility of such moments, and our bodies might be just plain tired.  Rev. Molly offered some suggestions for navigating such times:
  • We can anchor ourselves in our bodies and senses, being present to the moment.
  • We can offer our brains small rituals, expectations that can be realized.
  • We can build a safe, cozy physical space where we can go to recharge.
  • We can tune in to the natural rhythms of the world around us.
  • And we can tune in to the little moments of in-between-ness.  As we step through any doorway, we can take a breath and look at the possibilities of the new space we're entering.

The sermon is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/sarN3I1aVzo

As if to underscore the point of navigating in-between times of change, those who gathered at our own building had technical difficulties and weren't able to watch the sermon this morning, but they made the best of it, singing hymns and enjoying fellowship as members of our faith community.  In staying with the moment and honoring the ritual in whatever form in the familiar space, perhaps we see synchronicity --- Rev. Molly's advice coming in useful even when it wasn't heard.

This Thursday, September 30th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents a Capital READ Author Talk with Allen Eskens.  Registration required.  Eskens is the author of five critically acclaimed and award-winning novels. In 1991, he began writing Nothing More Dangerous as a way to explore his feelings about prejudice and racism, working sporadically on the story during the intervening years. He published the book--his sixth--last year to high praise from both national and local publications.  Nothing More Dangerous is different from his previous works; it's a story set in the Missouri Ozarks in the 1970s with a focus on family, loyalty, friendship, and simmering racial tension. Reviewers have called the book "a stunning small-town mystery": (New York Times Book Review) and "a coming-of-age book to rival some of the best..." Possibilities Anyway

9/19/2021

This Sunday, Pastor Nancy TannerThies continued our monthly theme with a sermon on “Possibilities Anyway”.  She set the stage with a litany of “I am so tired,” citing 25 aspects of our lives.  But in spite of being tired, we can still choose possibilities for now and beyond.  Pastor Nancy then told a creation myth and how we deal with paradox, opposites, two poles.  We tend to jump in one direction; we need to consider a range of possibilities with the help of other folks.  Since our choices are based on our values, we need to examine our values, based partly on the seven UU principles.  Pastor Nancy quoted a letter from Thomas Merton during the war in Viet Nam.  Merton wrote that all our efforts may not change events much, but “personal relationships save everything”.  It is hard to live in paradox, but we show up, make choices and create a desired future.  Pastor Nancy concluded with a recording of the song: “We shall be known by the company we keep…It is time now, and what a time to be alive…In this Great Turning we shall learn to lead in love”.  (Summary by Roger TannerThies)

Coming Together: Water Communion

9/13/2021

On September 12 we celebrated our annual Water Communion, a ceremony of coming together to begin a new church year.  We shared an ingathering greeting via video from Unitarian Universalist Association president Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray.  As she reflected, the possibilities for coming together in the face of the pandemic continue to shift, at times creating a confusing patchwork of needs across different times and places, and we need care, kindness, and patience to come together and share the healing power of our faith.  Here at UUFJC, we made room for members and friends both in-person and online to share water that represented many things close to their hearts: experiences on distant travels and near at hand, favorite places of departed loved ones, homes fondly remembered and homes newly found, the sustaining power of water and the need to ensure access to it for all.  Water nourishes life and creates ground for possibility, and we continue our quest to embrace possibilities together.

Embracing Posibility

9/8/2021

On Sunday, September 5, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin our month of reflections on Embracing Possibility.  We often think of "realism" as a dark outlook, and many dark things are currently happening in our world to bolster that notion, but Rev. Mike reminded us that true realism means looking at all the possibilities, including the possibility of positive change.  The best way to foster hope for those positive possibilities, Rev. Mike said, is through using our reason, sympathizing with others and applying our ingenuity to improve the world for them and ourselves.  The key commitments of a reasoned approach are to provide evidence for your beliefs and to constantly re-examine those beliefs.  All of us, liberal, conservative, or independent, have a natural reflex to resist information that upsets our beliefs, or to believe things only because they are cultural touchstones we want to identify with.  We must accept this and do our best to dig beneath the things we think we know.  We can gain hope from a long history of human accomplishments arising from this approach --- new forms of healing, new values upholding peace and compassion --- and temper our "realism" with the possibilities to be found in whatever life deals us.

News Note: We are also looking forward to a party next week, celebrating milestones for two of our beloved longtime members.  See Coming Events below or contact Roberta Dunkel for more information.

UUFJC Newsletter, Flame on the Water September 2021

Last Sunday, we were joined by local journalist and historian Bob Priddy for a talk about "The Roman Goddess on the Missouri Capitol" --- the statue of Ceres atop the Missouri State Capitol dome.  From its selection and inspiration through to its recent repair and restoration, the statue has a rich and complex history.  Like much American civic sculpture, it presents a goddess not as a religious statement or an object of worship, but as a symbol and an idea --- in this case, the bounty of the earth blessing our state's agriculture and people.

"Realism Means Being Open to Possibilities," Rev. Mike Adamek

I have never met a pessimist. Even in my moments of darkest depression, I called myself a realist. A self-described realist might say, “Don’t be disappointed, just don’t expect anything good.” However, any realism without also some optimism is truncated. Realism includes hope.

Rootedness

8/23/2021

Sunday morning, we were invited to join our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia for their online services, with a message from Rev. Molly Housh Gordon, who has recently returned from sabbatical.  Rev. Molly focused this morning on rootedness, on being at home in the place where we are.  Most Americans, whether our ancestors came here, were forcibly brought here, or were pushed aside for others, have a generational history of displacement.  If we are not mindful, this can lead us to become alienated from relationship with the web of life around us, and we can suffer an un-named loneliness or act in thoughtless and destructive ways.  To heal ourselves and the world around us, Rev. Molly called us to face our own and our ancestors' history of displacement, to remember those who may have suffered as a result of that history, and to become attentive to the nature around us, to enter into a relationship of reciprocity with it, so that we and the life around us can be renewed together.
