Beloved Community

3/1/2021

Our March Newsletter is now available to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter: "Flame on the Water" March 2021

This Sunday, we did not hold our own UUFJC services, but as always, we were invited to join in online services with our UU neighbors.  These invitations and recent services offered by the national UU Association remind us that the Beloved Community Unitarian Universalism aspires to create is larger than any one congregation.  We at UUFJC are blessed as individuals and honored as a Fellowship that so many people have experienced Beloved Community among us specifically, but we should remember to reach further as well.  By reaching out to to form Beloved Community across distance --- and, where we can, across difference --- we can create new levels of resilience and new abilities to work toward justice.

Next Sunday, we will begin exploring our theme for March, Commitment.

For those who would like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/g7JmaKieinw  (They streamed the UUA's "Side with Love Sunday" service, which UUFJC streamed on February 14th.)

Next Sunday, March 7th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am

"Religions Help Families Create Well-Being," Betty Cooper
After G. William Sheek published the study on family education (February 14 Forum) he researched churches; he wanted to show how religion can help create family well-being. This research was published in a book, The Word On Families: A Biblical Guide to Family Well-Being. In this forum, our group will focus on Sheek’s findings in hopes that the ideas will help create well being in our families. Also, the universal ideas can be shared with friends and families in other religious organizations.

"Edge Walking"

2/22/2021

Sunday, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of Beloved Community.  Rev. Nancy argued that we do not build beloved community either by relaxing into the false safety of sameness or by throwing ourselves into chaos beyond our boundaries.  Instead, we foster true community and life by "walking the edge" where if we stay present, we find newness and creativity.  This can be a tiring balancing act; it is never safe, and at times we will fall, but with practice it can be a path of joy and resilience.

To guide us, Rev. Nancy drew on the work of Valarie Kaur and her Revolutionary Love project, which offers ideas on the kinds of encounters we will have along the edge.  She suggests a practice of wonder to bring us closer to others, and a practice of tending wounds to maintain boundaries without demonizing those opposed to us in the moment.  In relating to ourselves, she uses the imagery of childbirth: developing knowledge of when to breathe, when to push forward, and when to stay with the moment of transition.

Answering the Call of Love

2/15/2021

Sunday morning, we shared a service with fellow UUs across the country and across the world as the Unitarian Universalist Association streamed a special worship concluding this year's Thirty Days of Love observance.  We as UUs are often encouraged to "answer the call of Love," but perhaps we should say it "the calls of Love," because Love calls to us in many voices.  As such, the UUA service featured a variety of voices: UUs with different racial identities, gender identities, abilities, economic situations, and more.  They called us to choose love over and over again, negotiating and re-negotiating our bonds of covenant, letting go of our assumptions of who "we" are, opening ourselves to the needs of those around us, recognizing our place in the history of struggles for justice along race and other lines, and rising to create justice as an act of faith.  A common theme emerged amid the diversity of voices: answering the call of Love is not a passive act.  Love asks something more from us.

The full service from the UUA is still available to download or watch on Facebook.  Look for the links at https://www.uua.org/worship/holidays/side-love-sunday

"Who Belongs in Our Beloved Community?"

2/8/2021

A corrected version of our February Newsletter is now ready to view or download.  (The previous version had errors in the "Thursday" and "Friday" sections of the Coming Events.  Sorry for the mix-up.)
UUFJC Newsletter "Flame on the Water," February 2021 - Corrected

Sunday morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin exploring our new monthly theme, Beloved Community.  Forming a Beloved Community presents a higher standard than for other communities.  Trust is imperative, and members must understand that others may know us better than we know ourselves.  Moral rules for Beloved Communities are more stringent than for other communities.
Love for family and friends must expand to encompass everyone.  Help offered to the community must be expanded to others not in the community.  Members must seek mutuality, not merely reciprocity.  The community must be open to others, and share in others' joys and sorrows.  Beloved Communities operate democratically.  They seek the justice and fairness for others that they seek for themselves.  Finally, beyond respecting others' property, they respect the rights of all for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
(Summary by Katherine Connor.)

"What do today’s families need to survive and thrive?," Betty Cooper
Family educators ask: What are the needs of today’s families? Seeing the domestic violence numbers rising in our community, is it possible that family needs are not being met? Are there specific strategies that could help? The Executive Director of the National Academy for Families, G. William Sheek, in the 1980s sought to find educational strategies that helped families to thrive. His research was published in a book, A Nation for Families. As we consider some of his ideas, hopefully his findings will stimulate us to think of additional ways to “better our families and those living in our community.”

Side With Love Sunday
The Unitarian Universalist Association is providing a service for the last day of this year's Thirty Days of Love.  What if to "side with love" meant making bold, faith-full choices? What if it were even a little bit scary? This worship service brings together sterling worship leaders and musicians from across the country to offer hopeful, moving, challenging reminders about what we, as Unitarian Universalists, are called to do, and BE, in the world.

"Roots and Wings"

2/1/2021

Our February Newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter "Flame on the Water," February 2021

Sunday morning we were invited to join our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia for their Founders' Sunday, celebrating the 70th anniversary of their church's founding.  On their website they called it a time to reflect on "roots and wings" --- being grounded in the past while learning and reaching for the future.  Their service is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/nTwge026lJY

"Roots and wings" is also a good image to wrap up our own month of reflection on Imagination.  Most "imaginative" people will tell you that nothing comes from nothing.  The most inventive flight of fancy still grows from the roots of what others have created and done, and yet it gives us a new experience and shows us new possibilities.  As we move forward, let us tend to the roots of our own imaginative inspirations, and also believe in the wings of joy and possibility that imagination gives us.

And, don't forget to submit any last-minute Guest At Your Table donations to support the UU Service Committee.  Donations for our Fellowship's drive are due today (see the donation link and address below and label the donation for Guest At Your Table).  You can also lend your support at any time at uusc.org.

Staying Grounded

1/25/2021

This morning, we were invited to share online services with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, where Rev. Molly Housh Gordon and others explored staying grounded.  In these times of grief, upheaval, and for some of us tentative glimmers of hope, we may feel like we're being flung into the stratosphere.  We have learned just how long we can keep the proverbial juggling balls in the air even when we feel like we're past our limit.  But if we stop, take a breath, and feel the pull of the earth on the soles of our feet, maybe we don't have to add "grounding" to our to-do list.  If we can let go and surrender, we can feel the deep inescapable truth, that the earth draws us to itself and supports us, and that we are drawn to each other, to support each other.  What might that feel like for you?  What dream or path might need less effort and grasping, more presence and release?  Listen to your body, give yourself permission to think that it might be safe, and when you feel like the time is right, for a while, let go.

The full service is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/LQ927Bf0Ito

"Invisible Help"

1/18/2021

Sunday, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of Imagination.  She began with a quote from poet David Whyte, observing that we are always tender and in need, but that we always receive "invisible help."  In these times of threat, we can try to push away our tenderness, to seek safety by eradicating fear, but Rev. Nancy reminded us that this kind of safety-seeking fosters inequity and authoritarian thinking.  She encouraged us instead to seek safety in mutual care, to help each other and address harms with processes of accountability and healing.  That vision may seem far away, but one of our invisible helps is imagination.  We can imagine a more caring and just world and imagine steps to make that world real piece by piece.  Rev. Nancy called on us to look at what form of imagination gives each of us that inspiration and to nurture that invisible helper.

For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service today is now available to view online, with pulpit guest Rev. Dr. C.W. Dawson Jr. giving a message for Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday: https://youtu.be/-z1SquU0Wa0

Specific examples of the most versatile and adaptable native woody and herbaceous plants will be included as well simple gardening practices essential for birds. The session will close with a brief review of local resources you can enlist to help on your journey.  Leabman has been gardening with native plants for 15 years and enjoys every one of the critters supported by his current inventory of 80 species of native plants. He has been active with the Audubon network for more than 25 years, and on staff with St. Louis Audubon since 2008.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

Philosophy for a Time of Crisis"

1/11/2021

Sunday, our own Frank Rycyk shared the article "Philosophy for a Time of Crisis" by Eric Weiner (Wall Street Journal, August 27th, 2020) and led a discussion afterward.  Weiner asserts that philosophy --- a rigorous exercise of reason and imagination --- can be "a practical, therapeutic medicine for the soul" in such chaotic times as we currently face.  Our unmooring from normality, even when it results from horrific events, can lead us to question our assumptions and learn toward a better future.  Philosophy's millennia-long project of finding meaning in life can help us stand strong, even in the face of grief and seeming helplessness.

Especially now, as the covid pandemic grinds on and political upheaval rocks our nation, we need tools to stay grounded and strong in our UU values.

For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service today is now available to view online, including a guest teacher sharing grounding techniques for the body and nerves: https://youtu.be/lgIBjHOhXeQ

"Imagine That!"

1/4/2021

Sunday, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin our monthly theme of Imagination.  Imagination, Mike said, can help us gain deep insight and sympathy and show us possibilities for the future, but how do we spark imagination?  For many of us, imagination works best as it interacts with reality --- don't wait to work it all out in your head, start taking the actions you can take and set your imagination to work on what they become.  In other words, plant the seeds in reality for the fruits of imagination to grow.

At the same time, our current political reality looks like a barren wasteland to some of us, and so imagining a just, flourishing, united future can be a challenge.  Rev. Mike pointed to the power of imagination to make a difference in people's thinking as they envision different experiences and futures.  As long as people have imagination, there is hope, and imagination tells us that another world is possible.

For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service today is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/faGHzCW7DAg

A Moment of Stillness

12/28/2020

Our January Newsletter is now available to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter "Flame on the Water," January 2021

This Sunday, we did not hold UUFJC services, but as always we were invited to visit our neighboring UU congregations.

The time of year also provided us with a good opportunity to wrap up our theme for December: "Stillness."  In the year-end lull after Christmas is done, many of us feel called to take that moment of stillness and reflect on what we want to leave behind and what we want to grow into in the year ahead.  Stillness is not only a time to discern, however; we can look for ways to bring it forward with us.  If we base our resolutions on frenetic effort and exertions of willpower, often we burn out on those goals and end up frustrated, but we should not give up on intentional transformation.  As we consider what we want to nurture in our lives going forward, let us consider how we can hold those intentions in stillness as well as in action.

Our Adult RE group also wrapped up 2020 this week and looked to bringing in 2021.  RE instructor Samantha writes:

"We discussed the ideas of setting goals for ourselves, something like having a New Year’s resolution, and the importance of having a growth mindset.  Individuals who believe their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, and input from others) have a growth mindset.  They tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset  (those who believe their talents are innate gifts).

"I challenge everyone to go into 2021 with new goals for themselves. Additionally, in setting goals ensure they are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound."

(Watch for the next Adult RE session coming Sunday, January 10th at a new time, 1:30 pm.)
