"Hibernation not Isolation"

12/21/2020

Sunday, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of Stillness.  Monday is the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, a natural time for darkness, stillness, and reflection.  This year is especially challenging: many of us have an extra weariness, but also an extra restlessness after so much unseasonable isolation already.  Rev. Nancy encouraged us to think of this time not as isolation but as hibernation, the way animals see themselves through the lean times and the earth quietly nurtures the nutrients and seeds of the future.  In this stillness, especially in this challenging year, we can listen and look deep within ourselves, reflect on what is seeing us through, what is being nurtured within us.  We can listen and look to what lies outside our own stillness and comfort and how we can connect with care and build a broader peace.

Rev. Nancy suggested these seven questions for our reflection:
  • What have I been hiding from during the isolation of summer and now want to avoid as winter comes?
  • What is there about the darkness that I fear and therefore flee?
  • What new life is stirring in me that can offer strength to my whole being?
  • What is the source of inner creativity that I discover in the dark of winter’s journey?
  • Do I feel embraced by my life, my tribe and my life companions?
  • How will I embrace my community, encouraging my own growth and celebrating the growth of self and others?
  • How will we encourage our community to reach out to those we describe as "other"?

We also announced the annual Guest At Your Table drive to support the UU Service Committee in its work with grassroots activists around the world.  This year's theme: "The Meaning of Home."  More information and stories of remarkable people UUFJC supports are available at uusc.org/resources/congregations/guest-at-your-table/.  Donations may be made through UUFJC using the link or address below - please label Guest At Your Table donations clearly.  Donations may also be made at any time at uusc.org.

And to all our members and friends who celebrate it: Merry Christmas!

"Stillness is Timelessness"

12/7/2020

Sunday, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin exploring our December theme of Stillness.  Anyone who has attempted meditation or parented a toddler knows how challenging it can be for humans to be still.  This time of year, many sing of "Silent Night" and of peace, evoking a nostalgic emotional feeling of stillness.  But Rev. Mike sought to go beyond emotion into what stillness can offer our reason.  He suggested that we can focus in, increasing our sensitivity to the object of our contemplation.  Like exploring a still frame of a favorite movie, focus can bring us into a place of timeless clarity that offers new insights and engages us in new ways.

Rev. Mike also shared the seasonal short story "The Loudest Voice" by Grace Paley, in which a Jewish-American girl is drafted into her school's Christmas pageant.  If we focus to the point of timelessness on this story, what whispers to us?  How would we feel if we were surrounded by a different culture drawing our children into its customs?  How would we feel if we were those children?

He will also discuss what friends and family can do in response to a loved one who has an addiction.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Thursday, December 10th at 6:30 pm, MRRL presents another virtual Zoom program: "Taking Care of YOU."  This program will provide practical strategies to better deal with stress and life’s challenges. Topics will include: taking care of all aspects of your health—mind, body and spirit; becoming more aware of the mind-body connection, responding with thought versus reacting automatically to life’s stressors, finding ways to become a happier person, simplifying your life, and learning to live more in the moment. "Refusing the Lie"

11/30/2020

UUFJC December 2020 Newsletter

Note: We are starting a text-message list to send reminders about our upcoming Zoom events to those who wish to receive them.  If you would like to be included, contact Katherine Connor: [email protected]

Sunday morning, our own Katherine Connor led our service and shared a UUA "Braver/Wiser" reading: "Refusing the Lie" by Jude Geiger.  Even in times like the current pandemic, we can feel on the one hand like we are never doing enough in our own sphere, and on the other hand like there is nothing we can do in the larger course of our society and world.  The lie to be refused in all of this is so deep in our culture that it can be difficult to identify.  Katherine's efforts to chase it down led her to a recent article by Fareed Zakaria, based on his new book, “Ten Lessons for a Post-Pandemic World.”  Zakaria writes that it is human agency that determines what kind of world will emerge from this crisis.  The lie, Katherine concluded, was that everything will just go back to what we thought was normal.  There are many things we want to recover --- hugs, get-togethers, un-hidden smiles --- but there is much we want to change, and the truth is that we can make change.

This week, we are also deeply concerned about the vandalism suffered by our neighbors at Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Holts Summit.  This historic church was founded 150 years ago by then-enslaved people.  More information about the vandalism and the community's supportive response can be found in this story at KRCGTV.com: "Community rallies behind church that was severely damaged by vandals."  The story includes information on how to donate to rebuilding efforts.  You can also donate through UUFJC (see PayPal link and address below and note clearly that the donation is for Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist), and we are exploring other ways to help as a congregation.  For more information, contact our president, Katherine Connor: [email protected]

"Stillness is Timelessness," Rev. Mike Adamek
Our lives are like movies that flow from moment to moment into a future always being born.  Everything is in constant motion, until those moments of stillness arrive that do not freeze or stop our lives, but allows our consciousness the timelessness of clarity. We all need those moments of timeless stillness, of taking stock, of being open and receptive.

11/23/2020

Note: We are starting a text-message list to send reminders about our upcoming Zoom events to those who wish to receive them.  If you would like to be included, contact Katherine Connor: [email protected]

This week, in a happy surprise, we were invited to join our neighbors at First Unitarian Universalist of Springfield, Missouri, for online services with a message from Rev. Michelle Scott-Huffman.  On this unique pandemic-year Thanksgiving week, many of us have faced hard decisions.  But in any year, Rev. Michelle reminded us, the legacy of this holiday presents us with difficult truths: about how the mythology of white settler contact with Native Americans white-washes the realities of displacement and genocide, how those very white settlers were our forebears in our own UU faith tradition, how the process of colonization continues into our own day.  How can we heed the call of these truths, and what can be redeemed?  We must go beyond lip-service and "virtue-signalling" and listen for the action our faith, justice, and gratitude call us to.  Because the core of gratitude is still something to celebrate.  Gratitude awakens us to the presence of the gifts of our world, the miracles everywhere that support our continued life, and to the opportunities we have to work for a better future.  As Rev. Michelle pointed out, it is not that we "have to" do the work of justice and radical love --- it is that we get to do that work.

"Refusing the Lie," Katherine Connor
Katherine Connor will share and reflect on a reading by Jude Geiger.  Excerpt: "We can’t turn back the clock to save lives, but maybe we can change our addiction to productivity that enables our leaders to fail us so tragically. Maybe we can change our habits of corporate consumption or unending growth of markets that leave small towns ruined. Maybe sustainability of markets—and our hearts and minds—is more important than the wealth of ten people on this globe."

"Healing"

11/16/2020

Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies joined us with more reflections on our monthly theme of Healing.  As we find ourselves in the middle of unsettled times, even hurt and dis-ease, many of us long for healing.  Rev. Nancy suggested that the healing we wish for can take three different forms, each with its own promise and risk.  We want Cures to repair our problems, but in trying to change reality back to some idyllic state, we can miss the process of creating the new reality that could be.  We need some level of Comfort to function and move forward, but we can also seek comfort as an escape and fail to address things that are important but uncomfortable.  And finally, through Compromise, we can come together in our universal human woundedness and build a new way forward together.  A bad compromise can lead to bad feelings and mistrust on all sides, but if we see it as a place not to sacrifice our values but to prioritize our values, if we are willing to listen to the inherent humanity even of those we disagree with, we can begin to build a way forward, even in the midst of long-term challenges.

We Save Ourselves

11/9/2020

This Sunday, we were invited to join our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia.  Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon reflected on what has been a week of complex emotions for many UUs hoping that our nation's democratic process would come to more fully reflect our welcoming values.  Many of us feel relieved and joyful, but also remain worried and disillusioned.  Rev. Molly called us to be reminded in this moment that our liberation is connected to the liberation of all, and to learn from the marginalized among us who have long known that the struggle toward a more just and loving society is long and hard, that we cannot wait for governmental or supernatural forces to save us: "we save ourselves in community."  Rev. Molly called us to build the future not by papering over wounds still bleeding or arguing with naysayers, but by building liberation and joy and keeping open a place at that table for anyone who will join us there.

The full service is now available to view online, with Rev. Molly's sermon, special music, words from UUCC Philosopher-in-Residence Rev. Dr. C. W. Dawson, and more: https://youtu.be/xp4gxUHoUms

"Healing Is Working on the Damage Done"

11/2/2020

Don't forget the US General Election this Tuesday, November 3rd!
For more information on voting in Missouri, visit:
https://www.mo.gov/government/elections-and-voting/

Sunday morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin exploring our monthly theme of Healing.  Among Rev. Mike's readings were these lyrics from the song "Anthem" by Leonard Cohen:

“Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.”

The Wholeness of all of us is cracked and in the days, weeks, months and years to come the cracks in our wholeness will be where both light comes in and pours out of our lives. Healing is not being cured of whatever ails you or being saved and spending eternity in bliss. Healing is living with the damaged past and present and integrating that damage into a better future for yourself and those who love you.  It is work we all have to do.
(Summary submitted by Katherine Connor.)

Remembrance

10/26/2020

Our November newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC November 2020 Newsletter

This Sunday, we were invited to join our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia for their annual Remembrance Service.  In this time of year when Earth-based and other faith traditions call us to a special closeness with those who have passed on, we shared a virtual presentation of remembrances, as well as reflections from Rev. Molly Housh Gordon.  Rev. Molly reminded us that those we lose leave a painful, tragic absence, but also leave gifts that we carry with joy, gratitude, even humor.  The sentiment was also shared in the song "We Are" by Sweet Honey in the Rock, and in the images of falling leaves included with the remembrance images.  Like the fallen leaves of autumn, those who pass from our lives can leave us bare and desolate as winter trees for a time, but those leaves also hold and warm the roots of the living and the seeds of those still to come.  Now as we brace ourselves to face an especially difficult winter in the midst of a pandemic, Rev. Molly encouraged us to be aware of and grateful for the gifts, warmth, and resilience we've gained from the ancestors, friends, and inspiring people who have gone before.

Self-Culture is the liberal ideal toward becoming a better person.  When I pause and look inward, I usually see it as a worthy life goal.  Healing is not being cured of whatever ails you or being saved and spending eternity in bliss. Community Events this week:

This Tuesday, October 27th at 7 pm via Zoom, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "Why the Olympics Were So Important to the Nazis: Fascism, Diplomacy, and Germany’s Role in Interwar Europe" with Dr. Bradley J. Nichols, Department of History, University of Missouri.  In the summer of 1936, the Third Reich hosted the first Olympic Games ever to be held in Germany. Three years later, the same country plunged Europe and the world into the most destructive conflict in human history. Controversial at the time, the “Nazi Olympics” thus became even more so in retrospect, compelling scholars to explain why such an inhuman regime received this honor to begin with, and how it orchestrated the event for maximum propaganda value. Less well known, are the specific goals Hitler and the Nazi hoped to achieve as a result, whether they actually accomplished those objectives, and the extent to which the affair as a whole helped the road to World War II. Dr. Nichols’ lecture will address these issues by describing the political scene in Europe on the eve of the 1936 Summer Olympics as well as gauging its reception in the public sphere afterward. By placing these dynamics in historical context, he will show how our knowledge and memory of the 14th Olympiad has been fundamentally shaped by an effort to excuse isolationism and appeasement, while simultaneously depicting the Western Allies (including the U.S.) as enemies of Hitler’s Germany from the outset.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Thursday, October 29th at 7 pm via Zoom, Missouri River Regional Library presents "Playing Like a Girl: Title IX and Equality for Athletes" with Dr. Ahoo Tabatabai, Department of Psychology and Sociology, Columbia College.  Title IX legislation, passed as part of the 1972 Education Amendments, helps protect against gender-based discrimination in educational programming that receives federal financial assistance. Although Title IX protects against discrimination in many different venues, it is often closely associated with athletics. Columbia College sociologist Dr. Ahoo Tabatabai will explore the important ways in which Title IX changed the athletic landscape for women and girls, while also focusing on the work that remains in ensuring that athletes are treated fairly regardless of their gender.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

"Deep Listening for Collective Knowing"

10/19/2020

Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of "Deep Listening."  Many of the evils of our world arise from "agreed-upon delusions" that we go along with quietly and thoughtlessly.  The answer is not to try to be islands unto ourselves -- "reality" is always a collective endeavor.  Instead, Rev. Nancy suggested deep listening as the path from "collective delusion" to "collective knowing."  Deep listening starts with listening to ourselves and taking the risk of making ourselves heard.  When we don't listen to ourselves, we can be too reactive and defensive to listen to others.  But when we do our internal listening work, we can listen to others deeply, with compassionate curiosity.  We can move beyond the need to be right and into the embrace of learning new truths together.

Community Events this week:

Monday, October 19th, at 7 pm in their East Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents an installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "Mechanization and the Village Rice Farmer in Vietnam: A photojournalism journey" with Will Sites, Department of Humanities and Communications, Lincoln University.  Registration and masks required.  Will Sites spent three weeks covering the summer rice harvest in a small Vietnamese rice-farming village. The rapid rise of rice-farming mechanization—coupled with the massive influx of high-paying factory jobs—is eroding the culturally important role of the village rice farmer. Rice farming is typically performed on small family-owned paddy fields dotting the landscape of rural Vietnam from the Mekong Delta in the south to the Red River in the north. Modern farm machinery is replacing the need for labor at the same time new industrial complexes are hiring thousands of young workers looking for a more comfortable and profitable future beyond the fields. The result may be catastrophic to an ancient way of life.  Sites will discuss what he saw, what he was told, and how the future will likely unfold.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Wednesday, October 21st is the last day to request an absentee or mail-in ballot for the upcoming election in Missouri.  More information at: https://www.mo.gov/government/election-and-voting/

This Thursday, October 22nd at 7 pm, MRRL presents a program via Zoom: "The 'True' Facts about Helen Stephens: Liar and Thief" with Sharon Kinney Hanson, biographer.  Helen Stephens, one of America’s premier athletes, set records and made Missouri and America proud at the 1936 Olympics and in athletic events throughout her long and storied career. Sharon Kinney Hanson spent several years interviewing Stephens, her colleagues, coach, friends and family members, and had access to Stephens’ letters and diaries, which culminated in the authorized biography The Life of Helen Stephens: The Fulton Flash. Stephens enjoyed acclaim as the first owner and manager of a basketball team, and as a coach, mentor and role model to many female athletes. Her life was not without controversy and drama, including gender challenges, which Hanson will address in her program. Stephens is one of the three main characters in Fast Girls, the 2020 Capital READ.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.
