What is Unitarian Universalism? ~ Rev. Tim Kutzmark

6/28/2023

Our July Newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, July 2023

This morning, we shared a message from our wider UU Community via video: "What is Unitarian Universalism" by Rev. Tim Kutzmark.  Unfortunately, we had issues with Zoom and were unable to provide an online service option.  We apologize, appreciate everyone's patience, and are working to fix the problem.

This Sunday wraps up our month of reflections on Delight, but it flows nicely into our upcoming theme for July: Play.  Just as our joy is sacred, so are the activities that bring us joy.  Not everything you do needs to be practical or productive; the universe gives us the sacred urge to embrace the possible for the sake of sheer delight, and in so doing we can spread the energy of life and compassion to those around us.

Reflections on Delight

6/21/2023

This morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies joined us for continued reflections on our monthly theme: "Delight."

Beyond our own services, we are part of a religious tradition that treats Delight not as a dangerous temptation, but as a sign of the holy, of blessed connection with our neighbors and our world.  In the words of John Gibb Millspaugh and Sarah Gibb Millspaugh:

"As we have been blessed, so we bless one another to be a blessing. Breathe in, breathe out, this breath we share with all that breathes. Feel the love of the universe flowing through this community, into you, and out into the universe again. Let the love of all the universe—your love—flow outward, to its height, its depth, its broad extent. You are more than you know, and more beloved than you know. Take up what power is yours to create safe haven, to make of earth a heaven. Give hope to those you encounter, that they may know safety from inner and outer harm, be happy and at peace, healthy and strong, caring and joyful. Be the blessing you already are. That is enough. Blessed Be; Amen."  (Adapted from the Karaniya Metta Sutta [Sunna Nipata 1.8] of the Pali Canon.)

This Thursday, June 22nd at 6:30 pm, Interfaith Climate Action JCMO meets at First Presbyterian Church (corner of Madison and McCarty).  This exciting local group is taking shape as the result of a collaborative effort among members of several local congregations. Interfaith Climate Action JCMO is inviting all members of faith and spiritual communities in Jefferson City who are concerned about climate change and related environmental issues to join them in raising awareness of this issue, as well as influencing habits and policy. The main business for this meeting will be setting the group's priorities for the near future, so a healthy UU presence could mean a lot!  Please contact Rich Burdge for more information.

This Thursday, June 22nd at 2 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents: "Japanese Tea Ceremony Demonstration and Tradition."  Chado, also known as chanoyu and commonly known in English as the Japanese Tea Ceremony, is a spiritual and aesthetic discipline for refinement of the self. It is known in Japanese as a “do,” a “way.” The word chado means “the way of tea.” This program will feature two practitioners of the Urasenke tea tradition:  Liz Pfeiffer and Dean Olson. The Urasenke Foundation is one of the three tea schools which have a direct lineage to tea master Sen Rikyu (1522-1591).  Pfeiffer has been studying the tradition of Japanese tea since 2007. In 2019-2020, she lived in Kyoto, Japan, as a student of the Midorikai program at the Urasenke Gakuen Professional College of Chado. She  commutes to Lawrence, Kansas, on a monthly basis to continue tea studies and is fortunate to practice with Urasenke-certified tea instructors. She is the lead cataloger at MRRL and will conduct the tea ceremony.  Olson is a student and teacher in the Urasenke tea tradition. He has practiced this tradition for more than 25 years. He continues studying tea with other students and his tea instructor in Lawrence, Kansas, and has a background in Japanese art, literature and history. He will discuss the tea ceremony and the history of the tea schools.  Registration is limited to 25 for those who would like to sample a bowl of tea. Others are welcome to observe the ceremony.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Next Sunday, June 25th at 1:30 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL hosts a Local History Authors Panel.  The library and the Historic City of Jefferson co-sponsor a panel discussion with history authors from mid-Missouri, including Jeremy Amick, Michelle Brooks, Dottie Dallmeyer, Gary Elliot, Gary Kremer, Arnold Parks, Bob Priddy, and Walter Schroeder.  Moderated by KRCG's Zach Paul.  A reception will follow the panel, with the authors' books available for sale and signing.  Attendance is free and open to the public.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more library events, visit MRRL.org.

Delight ~ George Grimm-Howell

6/13/2023

This morning, George Grimm-Howell continued our reflections on our monthly theme: "Delight."

Beyond our own services, many voices in our UU tradition can remind us that delight is not frivolous or saccharine, but a grounded response to our world in all its awe and complexity, such as in this poem by Terry Pahucki:

Joy

I have been wondering
what the morning glories
know. Is it envy
that compels these vines
to strangle other flowers
arising in their path?

Or perhaps self-preservation,
to climb these walls, forsaking
humbler beings, winding
greedy stems around the trellis
in their hungry pursuit of light.

Still, every morning,
basking in their spiral shadows,
I want to believe it is something more

this fevered yearning
to open purple flowers,
yield bold-throated Glorias
to the sun,
and in the blaze of afternoon
curl petals softly into shyness.

And every morning, I plead
with the dew-moist buds
to know their secret joy:
to open and close without holding,
to surrender all to light,
to sing
I am completely yours
over and over again.

This Thursday, June 15th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "Opportunities for Sheep and Goat Producers Across Missouri."  Currently there are about 80 million lamb and mutton consumers in the U.S. with up to $2 billion in purchasing power. Missouri is home to 15 million acres of forest and 17 million acres of pasture, providing vast possibilities for livestock production. A sheep and goat enterprise can be started on a small farm with small breeding stock, and the animals can be raised on forage alone. Investment can be paid fast, with quick expansion of herd and no external hiring required. It can be an excellent enterprise for farmers, including low-income producers. Lincoln University’s Cooperative Extension provides year-round training programs for sheep and goat producers across the state. Dr. Mohan Acharya, state extension and research specialist for LU, will explain the possibilities for this agricultural venture.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Delight ~ Rev. Nancy TannerThies

6/9/2023

Our June newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, June 2023

This morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies joined us for our first service of the summer, and our Children's Religious Education class began their monthly theme: "Delight."  Adults, too, can find spiritual grounding in Delight, as in these words by adrienne maree brown:

"Pleasure reminds us to enjoy being alive and on purpose... Pleasure—embodied, connected pleasure—is one of the ways we know when we are free. That we are always free. That we always have the power to co-create the world. Pleasure helps us move through the times that are unfair, through grief and loneliness, through the terror of genocide, or days when the demands are just overwhelming. Pleasure heals the places where our hearts and spirit get wounded. Pleasure reminds us that even in the dark, we are alive. Pleasure is a medicine for the suffering that is absolutely promised in life…  Pleasure is the point. Feeling good is not frivolous, it is freedom."

Creating We ~ Rev. Nancy TannerThies

5/31/2023

Our June newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, June 2023

This morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies wrapped up our month of reflections on Creativity.  Earlier this month, she spoke about "creating me," and now extended the view to "creating we," because we all need connection and cannot create alone.  Like people, groups must know who they are and what they want, and members must know these things both about themselves and about the group.  As the group continues together, its members need to stay engaged and in dialogue, to allow room for constructive discomfort, to be able to own their truth and speak it, and to be willing to live in a process that is never finished.  But like people, groups do not last forever; when loss of commitment or compromise suggests that a group can no longer serve is purpose or its members needs, Nancy said, a clear ending that celebrates the group's time together can encourage new "we"s to form, an ending that is not a failure but a step forward into creating new futures together.

Community Events this week:

This Wednesday, May 31st at 6:45 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "The Planet’s Plastic Crisis and Our Health."  Aside from being unsightly, single-use disposable plastic is a serious climate concern. Plastic production and waste mismanagement—from the extraction of component materials to various manufacturing processes—pose significant threats to climate stability, biotic and abiotic natural resources, human health, and quality of life. This program will feature Dana Ripper and a discussion of the various points in plastic production and waste management where change can be made and how you can become involved in that change. She is a wildlife ecologist who focuses on conservation via ecosystem health. In 2010, she co-founded the Missouri River Bird Observatory, a nonprofit organization dedicated to conservation via science, education and advocacy. One of MRBO’s major emphases is systemic reduction in single-use plastics, and it is an affiliate organization of Break Free From Plastic and Beyond Plastics.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Thursday, June 2nd at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents their First Friday Film.  This month's selection: "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill."  This documentary's endearing  guide is Mark Bittner, an aging musician who befriends a flock of urban parrots in a San Francisco's neighborhood. It's a romance and a comedy, featuring a rambunctious group of parrots with their individual personalities and unique traits of their species. And it has a surprise ending that "makes you feel like you could fly out of the theater" (San Jose Mercury).  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

UUFJC Business Meeting 2023

5/17/2023

Our May newsletter is now available to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, May 2023

This morning, we held our Annual Business meeting.  In their reports, our officers and committee chairs reflected on how far we've come this year: we've bounced back from Covid, welcomed intern minister George Grimm-Howell, and welcomed back Rev. Nancy TannerThies.  We also remain committed to making our services accessible through Zoom, although it continues to be a bumpy process.  Our president, Rich Burdge, offered thanks to all our members, supporters, volunteers, ministers, and staff who have made it possible.

The speakers at the meeting also pointed to ways volunteers could help move our Fellowship even further.  Member relations, building management, social action coordination, and assisting the treasurer are major ways to help, but there are many more opportunities as well.  You could deliver readings, light candles, or moderate at our Sunday services (don't worry --- it's not hard and we're a friendly audience!).  You can provide a discussion topic for our Adult Forum.  You could join the Art Committee to help display creativity in our building, or the Caring Committee to support members and friends in need.

Or if you're really committed, you could serve on a future UUFJC board.  Toward the end of the meeting, we announced our nominating committee for next year: Katherine Connor, Joan Kurtzeborn, and Frank Rycyk.  If you are interested in serving on our board in the future, contact one of them.

We thank you all for being part of our Fellowship, and we hope for another great year together!

Community Events this week:

Next Sunday, May 21st at 2 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "Keep It Old-Time—Fiddle Music in Missouri from the 1960s Folk Music Revival to the Present."  Since its evolution in Europe centuries ago, the fiddle/violin has become a true “people’s instrument” that spans most of the globe. Whether called violin or fiddle (the same instrument, just with differing customs of learning and performance), it continues to be enjoyed across all kinds of traditions and communities. “Keep it old-time” is a familiar phrase that echoes many fiddlers’ preference for carrying on inherited tunes and styles of former times, but most musicians learn from many sources and influences and appreciate different styles.  This program offers some live examples of Missouri fiddling and dance music and includes discussion about the history and people of the fiddle.  The presenter, Howard Marshall, is professor emeritus and former chair of art history and archaeology and director of the Missouri Cultural Heritage Center at the University of Missouri. He will be accompanied by his old friends Heinrich Leonhard and Kathy Gordon, and special guests John P. Williams, Rachel Krause, and Robert Makey.  Marshall’s new book, the final book in his trilogy about fiddlers, will be available at the program, along with the first volumes. Each book includes a companion music CD of archival and contemporary recordings of fiddlers discussed in the book.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Note: Don't forget our Annual Business Meeting, coming next Sunday, May 14th.  If you are a UUFJC member, please plan to attend!

This morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies returned to UUFJC to begin exploring our May theme of Creativity.  She began quite directly --- by handing everyone a piece of paper and telling them to do something creative with it.  Again and again, the universe hands us life with its not-always-happy bundle of possibilities and asks us to be creative with it.  When we receive the paper --- when we receive life's possibilities in any given moment --- are we excited?  Happy?  Annoyed by the demand?  On some level most of us are anxious that we might be rejected, vulnerable, or unequal to the creative task.  As we navigate creating our lives, Rev. Nancy offered guideposts drawn from the work of T. Thorn Coyle: Know our selves, needs, and yearnings; put our Will into our intentions, Dare to move forward in the face of uncertainty; and finally, Be Silent, resisting self-justification and blame and taking the quiet time we need for recovery, reflection, and imagination.

Rest is Resistance: Can I Get An Amen? ~ Rev. Emilie Boggis

5/1/2023

Sunday, April 30th:

Our May newsletter is now available to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, May 2023

This morning, we wrapped up our month of reflections on "Resistance" with a recent message from our wider UU community.  In a sermon titled "Rest Is Resistance: Can I Get An Amen?," Rev. Emilie Boggis drew on the work of "Nap Bishop" Tricia Hersey and others and called us to resist some of the injustice of our society --- by resting.  We are surrounded by a "grind culture" that holds our inherent worth and dignity hostage, telling us that only by endless exertion can we earn our worthiness.  It tells us that we must constantly be "productive," even as the "productivity" held out to us tramples over the interdependent web of life, our own well-being, and the space and ease we need to be in touch with ourselves and imagine our future.  By taking the rest we need and having faith that we deserve it, we can resist this "grind culture" and begin to resist the destructive systems it is a part of.  "The times are urgent," Rev. Boggis said; "let us slow down."

"Where the Divine Dwells" ~ George Grimm-Howell

4/25/2023

Sunday, April 23rd:

Note: Next Sunday, April 30th, we are having a potluck lunch after our services.  Those attending in person, please bring a favorite dish!

This morning, George Grimm-Howell joined us for his monthly message.  As he wrote: "To quote a favorite hymn, we are a faith that 'trusts the dawning future more.' But a focus on the future may mean letting go of theologies that no longer serve us. Unitarian Universalists have seen the temple of our faith deconstructed and rebuilt time and again as we grapple with an ever-evolving sense of truth and divinity. Where, for you, does the divine dwell?"
