May 15, 2022

5/15/2022

Sunday, May 15th:

This morning, our own Betty Cooper delivered a message, sharing the story of her faith journey.  The faith experiences of our past teach us and shape us; they may have brought us into vital relationships, they may have inspired our passions, and they also may have taught us less healthy patterns that we need to reflect on and become aware of in order to grow and change.  Betty's own story highlighted the human need for warmth and connection, the importance of welcoming children and youth, and the importance of openness to learning and change.  As Betty said, sharing our experiences leads us into deeper relationship with each other.  She told her story today in hopes that others will tell their stories in turn.

Nurturing Beauty

5/11/2022

Our May newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water" May 2022

Sunday, May 8th, 2022

This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us via Zoom to speak on the “un-regarded epiphanies of every blessed day”. His sermon, titled Nurturing Beauty, explained that beauty is inherent in the natural world, which is the source of all verbal expressions of itself. The core of transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson's life was the un-regarded epiphanies of life. Emerson not only studied the natural world by reading scientific publications, but he also read a vast variety of religious texts to open himself to a deeper and more profound understanding of the beauty of the world. Beauty cannot be measured by objective standards and doesn't have to lead to anything else. An appreciation of the humanities, to understand the feelings and values of ourselves and others can lead us to a better understanding of beauty. We can gain a perception of beauty through works of art; the details the artist wants portrayed can be made to be seen clearly in their work. Paul Cézanne did this by altering slightly the details in landscapes to give the viewer the impression he desired. Instead of simply producing a re-creation of the landscapes, Cézanne gave us an impression of what he wanted the viewer to see in the landscape. Epiphanies can come from constant attention and study of beauty, anyone can do this in their own way when we give our undivided and sustained attention to deepening our lives through studying the natural world or by creating compositions of art.  (Summary by Logan White)

Community Events this week:

This Tuesday, May 10th, the Emergency Housing Subgroup of the Jefferson City Homelessness Working Group holds its monthly meeting.  To get involved with this or other aspects of the working group, contact Patt Behler.

This Tuesday, May 10th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "From Need to Reality: Fresh, Locally Produced Food for Jefferson City."  The journey from food insecurity and limited income opportunities to economic stability, better health, and reduction of chronic killers (obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure) started with an idea to develop a local food system. Our neighbors to the north have been working on this for some time in partnership with the University of Missouri Extension, many community partners and interested individuals. Despite the unique nature of the diverse Jefferson City culture, this journey started in a similar way. Jefferson City is inhabited by resilient people with specific needs. In 2020, Lincoln University Cooperative Extension, in partnership with Building Community Bridges and the City of Jefferson, applied to the EPA-Local Foods Local Places project. The award was granted. This project supports a coming-together around the development of a local food system. It’s bigger and more holistic than the focus of the LFLF grant awarded in 2-15. This presentation from Sarah J. Eber, human nutrition and health program coordinator, will provide a little history and focus on this new journey to engage participants in being a part of…the Rest of the Story.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Thursday, May 12th at 7:30 pm is the monthly meeting of the local chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.  Meetings are currently being held virtually.  To register or for more information, contact Alicia Erickson at [email protected].

Next Sunday, May 15th at 2 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL holds an Artist Reception for Gladys Swan.  Meet the artist, view her impressive artwork, and enjoy some light refreshments.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Our May newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water" May 2022

Sunday, May 1st:

This morning, we held our Annual Business Meeting, an affirmation of our faith commitment to "the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large."  We approved our new fiscal year budget, with extra money for some needed building maintenance and for outreach efforts like our neighborhood pantry and Salvation Army meals.  We heard reports from our officers and committees, and a recurring theme was our need for more people's time, talent, and viewpoints in our Fellowship's leadership and activities.  Can you join or lead our Membership Committee in welcoming new people and caring for current members and friends?  Our Social Action Committee in helping members and friends make a difference in our world?  Would you like to share your viewpoints in our Adult Forum?  Would you like to be part of our Sunday services in ways big or small?  Can you help us present our services via Zoom?  Please contact a member of our board --- your talents can help keep our Fellowship healthy and vital.  Finally, we selected a Nominating Committee: Patt Behler, Katherine Connor, and Barb Koenig will be seeking candidates for next year's board.  And, as of our Annual Business Meeting, the incoming board members we elected in March officially take up their offices: many thanks to our new Secretary, Logan White, and our new Religious Education Director, Samantha Porter!

In other news, the "Congregational Record" inviting candidates for our part-time minister position is now live on the UUA's website.  Our president, Rich Burdge, writes:

"The UUFJC now has a Congregational Record posted on the UUA website, which means that we are officially advertising for a part-time Minister! This is how ministerial job-seekers can learn more about us and decide if our position is one they would like to apply for. I would also like for you, our members, to see how we are presenting ourselves, so the entire document is attached. If there are any comments or feedback on any part of it, please let a board member know. This is a Board-approved document, but given the format of the UUA website, portions may be edited or updated, given Board approval. Also please be aware that church data generally reflects the 2021-22 church year."

This Friday, May 6th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library hosts their monthly First Friday Film.  This month's selection: "Spencer."  The marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles has long since grown cold. Though rumors of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at the Queen's Sandringham Estate. But this year, things will be profoundly different. Spencer is an imagining of what might have happened during those few fateful days. UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water" May 2022

Sunday, April 24th:

This morning, we virtually joined our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia for a service honoring Earth Day.  To help heal the environmental damage our societal systems cause, focusing on individual choices distracts us with small-impact actions.  Even the idea of "saving the planet" can cast us as having control over the Earth when the truth is the other way around.  So what can we do?  Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon called on us, through embodied experiences of connection with natural beauty, to act in community and to focus on our love for each other and the Earth all around us.  If we are going to save the planet, we must do it not as individual magnanimous masters, but as connected beings acting together within and from a wild love.

The service is now available to view online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMFvmRAN9kI

April 17, 2022

4/17/2022

Sunday, April 17th:

This morning, we celebrated our annual Flower Communion.  Members were invited to each bring a flower.  We gathered the flowers together on our chalice table, and in the end each member was invited to take a different flower than the one they had brought.  This beloved ceremony was originated by Norbert Čapek at his Unitarian church in Czechoslovakia in 1923.  Rev. Maja Čapek, Norbert's wife, brought it to the US in 1940, and it has become a Unitarian Universalist tradition.  The flowers remind us of the earth's reawakening at this time of year, and of the diverse gifts each member brings to the beautiful bouquet of our faith journey together.

On the same Sunday as we observed this gathering of our gifts, we also welcomed new members who have recently joined our fellowship community.  We are joyful to add their colors to our bouquet!

UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water" April 2022

Sunday, April 10th:

This morning we continued our April theme of Awakening with a message from our wider Unitarian Universalist community via video.  Drawing on a poem by Rachel Kann, "What to Tell The Children" (https://youtu.be/BG2ZrHqlSZ0), Rev. Jim Coakley of the Green Bay Area UU Fellowship titled his message, "Tell the Children That This is the Great Awakening!"  Our nation and our forerunners in faith tradition have gone through several "Great Awakenings" when broad movements of passionate faith changed the history of churches and the history of society.  Some of those changes still inspire us, some may frustrate us, but what of today?  Can we answer the call of our times with a movement of passionate faith driving toward our values of freedom, compassion, and justice?  Rev. Coakley suggested that we can learn from the preachers of those past Great Awakenings and approach our own with repentance for past injustices, teaching truer principles, and giving ourselves and the children hope for the future.

Also please note, we have begun our annual pledge drive!  We have big plans for this year to grow our Fellowship and reach out to our community, but we can't do it without everyone's help!  Please contact our Treasurer, Bob Antweiler, with any questions or pledges: [email protected].

"Invest in Our Planet," Betty Cooper

The April Soul Matters theme, “Awakening,” reminds us to “reawaken” to Mother Earth’s rich resources. This year’s Earth Day theme is: Invest in Our Planet.  Elders and youth “awaken” us; they show us how to use our individual power to sustain the environment.  Greta Thunberg reminds us that youth are making a difference.  We will share our own and others’ ideas on making our planet sustainable.

UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water" April 2022

Sunday, April 3rd:

This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin exploring our theme for April, "Awakening."  Women's clubs of nineteenth-century America were an important predecessor of the feminist movements of the twentieth century. Through mutually supportive and often rigorous intellectual pursuits, these clubs not only increased their members' levels of knowledge in various areas, but the realization of their personal identity, and often the limitations of the social environments in which they lived. Despite the members of these clubs being overwhelmingly white, Protestant, middle-class women, the consciousness that they raised, especially the need for female education and political participation, had influence far beyond their immediate sphere. There is a parallel between the effect of these clubs and the UU journey of lifelong learning, and the need to be "born again", in an intellectual sense, repeatedly, both as free and independent individuals, and as a communal passage. But we must also ask ourselves if UU's share the weakness of these clubs of not welcoming new members who do not already share the group's communal history.  (Summary by Rich Burdge.)

Awakening: April's Soul Matters Theme

3/28/2022

Sunday, March 27th:

At our services this morning, we held our annual Election of Officers.  Those chosen for our 2022-2023 Board of Directors are:
President: Rich Burdge (continuing)
Vice President: Lisa Sanning (continuing)
Secretary: Logan White (incoming)
Treasurer: Bob Antweiler (continuing)
Director of Religious Education: Samantha Porter (incoming).
Many thanks to all our incoming, continuing, and outgoing board members for stepping up to serve our Fellowship!  The new board will take office at our Annual Business Meeting in May.

We also shared a video from our wider UU community to wrap up our month of reflections on "Renewing Faith."  Rev. Duffy Peet noted that UUs tend not to believe in renewing "blind" or dogmatic faith, but that we can embrace broader definitions of faith, not as belief in static received ideas, but as an ongoing journey.  Our principles call us to search for truth and meaning, to accept one another and encourage spiritual growth.  In these ways we can have faith in ourselves, our world, and in the transcendent while embracing our responsible freedom and reason.  The message is available to view online: https://youtu.be/2I5T1ck4dII

Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am
"Consciousness Raising as a Group Activity through Education," Rev. Mike Adamek

To my mind, Awakening is a form of consciousness raising. Awakening is the Soul Matters theme in April.   Is awakening a solitary journey or a communal passage?  It is intimately personal even when it is fostered socially. We will examine Women’s Social Clubs in the 19th century, which were often fostered by Liberally Religious  women. As one such club motto put it, “Mental Culture is the Food of Humanity,” which I take to mean in the words of a 1911 poem, that the Rising of the Women, meant the Rising of the Human Race.

Tomorrow, Monday, March 28th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library hosts an Author Talk with Jeremy Amick.  Amick will profile General Hank Stratman, the subject of his new biography. General Hank Stratman’s life appears to be defined by overcoming challenges—whether pushing to victory during high school basketball games or crossing into enemy territory during the Persian Gulf War. Rising from inconspicuous beginnings in the small community of Vienna, Missouri, Hank graduated from the ROTC program at Lincoln University. His legacy includes service in the Cold War, combat operations in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, peacekeeping deployments to Bosnia, and more. General Stratman will join Amick for this program. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Tuesday, March 29th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents: "Cryptocurrency: Investment or Gamble?"  Bitcoin, Ethereum, crypto mining, blockchain—you might have seen these terms in news stories about the future of money. If you’re wondering how crypto operates and what investment in this form of currency involves, Roger P. Dudenhoeffer, executive vice-president and mortgage lending manager with Jefferson Bank, will provide some definitions and answers in an informative presentation on the safety and stability of tomorrow’s money today. Can we bank on it?  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Friday, April 1st at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents their First Friday Film.  This month's selection: "Belfast."  Nominated for multiple awards, including best picture of the year, "Belfast" is a poignant story of love, laughter and loss in one boy's childhood amid the music and social tumult of the late 1960s in Northern Ireland. Buddy's family lives in a largely Protestant district with a few Catholic families, but one day his community and everything he thought he understood about life is suddenly turned upside down. His family gets caught in the mayhem and must decide to stay or leave the only place they have ever called home. Academy-Award nominee Kenneth Branagh wrote and directed the film, which is based on his childhood experience during a troubled time.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Resignation is not an option

3/21/2022

On Sunday, March 20th, our own Katherine Connor shared her reflections on one of the Unitarian Universalist Association's "Braver/Wiser" readings, "The Question" by Erika A. Hewitt.  As we consider the rare miracle of life on earth --- and its fragility in the face of some of the human behavior we see --- it can be a challenge to renew our faith in humanity and the future, but Katherine reminded us that "resignation is not an option."  If we look beyond the ugly events that grab our attention, we can see the arc of history bending toward justice against the odds, and we can see acts of compassion and courage all around, from the outpouring of support for the people of Ukraine to a UUFJC friend donating to our community pantry.  In a complex and interconnected world, we can't know what difference our actions will make, but we know that even small actions do make a difference.

The Braver/Wiser collection is a great resource for reflection, and we invite other members and friends to share essays that speak to them and their reflections on them.  If you are interested, contact our vice president, Lisa Sanning.

In other news, our board is continuing to monitor the Covid situation, and we currently feel comfortable returning our seating arrangement to normal.  Full statement from our president, Rich Burdge:
"After two years and a very difficult winter, there are indications that the COVID-19 pandemic is easing. Various metrics and indicators show that Cole County, and much of the state and country, is now at relatively low risk, and that this risk will continue to decline. While there is word of a new subvariant in Europe, it is very similar to Omicron, and it is not clear how much of an impact it will have here. Given this situation, the UUFJC Board has determined that the time is appropriate to return to conventional, undistanced seating during our Sunday services. If circumstances change, we will change our practices as well. Virtual attendance by Zoom is still an option for those who wish, and our seating arrangement has always been somewhat flexible. It should not be a problem for those who wish to maintain social distancing to do so during the service. We would also like to thank all our members for their cooperation during these past difficult months, which has allowed us to successfully keep our congregation relatively safe from COVID-19. While we can't know exactly what the future brings, we are hopeful that the worst of this pandemic is behind us, and we look forward to gathering together again, and making the most of the days to come."

Sunday, March 13

This morning, we were invited to join our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia for an online service that, as it happened, spoke powerfully to our monthly theme of "Renewing Faith."  UUCC's regular guest preacher Rev. Dr. C.W. Dawson and musical guest J. ARTiz reminded us that many of us experience "dark nights of the soul," and we all live in a culture that at times teaches selfishness, but we all have gifts, and our gifts are meant to be shared.  When we connect with our gifts, they can help us renew a sense of purpose, help us connect with others, and make a path forward for us.  They can renew our faith in our journey toward the blessed community and loving, just world we long for.  Some of the language may have been challenging for independent-spirited UUs (like myself), but it is worth thinking about: to what can you "give yourself away" in energizing faith?  To what can you say, "If you need someone, here am I --- send me"?

The service is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/-9Op3mUgBvw

And remember all our ways to stay in touch!   You can join our open-posting "UUFJC Cafe" Google Group to chat with other members and friends via e-mail and receive additional announcements and reminders (contact the Administrator at [email protected] to join).

We are currently in urgent need of donations for our free community pantry; coordinator Joan Kurtzeborn reports that supplies are "perilously low."  For more about the pantry and current needs, contact Joan.  Reimbursements are available; contact our treasurer, Bob Antweiler: [email protected].
As part of our search for a part-time minister, we are asking everyone to complete a ministerial needs survey.  We have paper copies available at the building, and electronic copies are attached to this email.  The deadline has been extended, and responses are now due next Sunday, March 6th.  For more about the survey or the minister search, contact our president, Rich Burdge.

Registration is now open for our MidAmerica UUA Region’s annual Regional Assembly, to be held online April 30th.  For more information, visit the Regional Assembly Registration webpage.

On Thursdays at 5:30 pm, Katherine Connor hosts a weekly Zoom Happy Hour for UUFJC Members and Friends to gather and check in.
