This morning, past UUFJC vice president Alexis joined us again to conclude our month of reflections on Trust.  Alexis shared her own experience in taking the leap of faith to attend seminary and finding that others made possible what had not been possible before --- her "stepping out" was met with others' "stepping up."  Such acts of faith, she said, require responses of care to open such possibilities.  And acts of care are acts of faith also: faith that what we do matters, that we can make the world a better place, even though not every risk is encouraged or rewarded.  Alexis believes that it is in the acceptance and give and take of a free community where we can find a faith worth stepping out and stepping up for.

Wright Sr. will profile the African American pioneers, educators, civil rights activists, scientists, entertainers, athletes, authors, soldiers and others who have played major roles in shaping the history and culture of the state and nation. This Thursday, February 21st the Missouri State Archives will present “In the Shadow of Dred Scott: St. Louis Freedom Suits and the Legal Culture of Slavery in Antebellum America”, 7:00 p.m.  Dr. Kelly M. Kennington draws on the casefiles of more than 300 enslaved individuals who, like Dred Scott and his family, sued for freedom in St. Louis.
 
Also, on Thursday evening, the Capital Area Interfaith Alliance presents a program about the Old Order Mennonites.  The event will be at the First Christian Church at 7:00 p.m.
 
On Saturday, February 23rd, two trivia-night fundraising events will take place, both at 6:00 p.m.  One, benefiting Habitat for Humanity, will be at the American Legion Post 5.  The other, benefiting the Jefferson City Animal Shelter, will be held at Immaculate Conception Church.

Saturday, February 16, the Hola Amigos group will be hosting a Fiesta Grande that’s open to all.  It will be from 2 to 4 pm.  There will be a flamenco dance demonstration at 2:30, and a “fashion show” and awards for ethnic costumes.  You are invited to dress accordingly.   You are also encouraged to bring a Latin dish or drink to share, with a small sign identifying the item and its country of origin.  (Contact Patt Behler)

The Missouri River Regional Library is hosting several events, including the Loosely Bound Book Club on Monday, 6 to 7:30 pm, a class on Tumblr on Tesday, 3 to 4 pm (reservations are required).
On Tuesday, 3 to 4 pm you can learn the basics about the growing social media platform, Tumblr.  Reservations are required.

Also on Tuesday, 6:30 to 8 pm, blogger Melanie Peters of Intentergy.com will share strategies for adding positive energy and organization to your life through writing. With ideas for blogging, social media practices, and journaling, this presentation will help you make a positive digital footprint by using a variety of composition practices. Writers looking for ways to develop their craft will also find this presentation helpful.
On Wednesday at 7 pm there will be a film, John Lewis: Get In the Way.  Follow the courageous journey of John Lewis, civil rights hero, congressional leader, and human rights champion whose fight for justice spans the past 50 years.

This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek began exploring our monthly theme for February: Trust.  Learning to trust enough to engage with our world is a basic task for all of us, one that we must often revisit with life's ups and downs.  So how can we learn to trust again when we feel hurt?  In situations where our safety is at stake, we should honor our intuition and take care of ourselves, but when it comes to opening our hearts, Rev. Mike offered some suggestions.  Take the time to watch how people speak and act.  Listen, allow others to define themselves, and strive to see their views in the best light.  See others as persons, not as the opinions they hold.  And, importantly, build our confidence in ourselves and our values so that we can be contradicted without feeling threatened.  We will not find trust in every situation, but if we open ourselves a little more, we can seek a common vision of the future together.

This Saturday, February 9th, join Missouri River Regional Library to "Learn Bridge in a Day," from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm in their Art Gallery.  Playing bridge is mental exercise. If you’re curious about bridge, you can learn the basics in this interactive class that has both instruction and coached play. You’ll learn point counting, opening, responding, scoring, and play of the hand. Registration is limited to 40. A $15 fee includes a 40-page manual and a boxed lunch. Michael Hughes, an accredited bridge teacher, will lead the class with assistance from Tony Wening. This Sunday, we celebrated the Fire Communion, our annual ritual to greet the new year.  In a sermon via video, we heard words for the occasion from Rev. Christina Hockman of the UU Church of Corpus Christi, Texas.  Rev. Hockman reminded us that we need to be willing to let go of the old in order to welcome the new, to clear space for new gifts to flow into our lives.  This can be challenging.  Indeed our habits often serve us well, granting our lives order and efficiency --- but if we cling too hard, we can become rigid and paralyzed.  We can resist both letting go of the old and letting in the new due to our unaddressed fears.  Referencing the Buddhist nun Pema Chodron, Rev. Hockman suggested that our job is not to fight those fears, but to get to know them, to receive our own feelings with objectivity and compassion.

In the spirit of letting go of the old and welcoming in the new, those present were invited to write on a piece of paper something they want to let go of, and the papers were then burned.  (For several years now, we've used magician's flash paper for this, which makes burning the papers fun and impressive.)

Building Community Bridges is a non-profit organization that focuses on the training and assisting of the youth in our community, while attempting to bridge the gap that has been created due to single-parent homes, drugs and alcohol, and run-ins with the police and court system.

This Sunday, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued our month of reflections on Possibility.  The possibilities around us, she said, are more numerous than we can imagine; they are endless --- but not limitless or boundless.  Although some limits we place on ourselves should be confronted and changed, there are limits we need to respect, such as the limits of living in harmony with the Earth.  We may look at some of the boundaries we place around our relationships and decide to be braver and more open, but some boundaries are necessary for healthy lives together.  Although our options are shaped by forces beyond our control, endless possibilities are still available to us; our past informs but does not fully determine who we are and what we choose.  In the breadth of our options and freedom of our choices we can find the responsibility and possibility of shaping the future.

This Tuesday, January 22nd at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library hosts Music at the Library with the Lisa Rose Jazz Duo.  Saxophonist Lisa Rose and pianist Harry Beckett will perform a series of jazz standards. Lisa brings 17 years of playing in and around the local jazz and blues scene in mid-Missouri. Originally from San Francisco, she arrived in the Heartland in 1998 to teach woodwinds to students of all ages and abilities. This Thursday, January 24th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents: "An Early Environmental Challenge in Missouri: The 19th Century Timber Boom."  Novelist Steve Wiegenstein’s new book, The Language of Trees, looks at the period in the late 1880s when the methods of the Industrial Revolution came to the farms and forests of Missouri, reshaping rural life permanently. He will talk about the economic and cultural changes that happened when large companies arrived in the state to harvest Missouri’s vast forests, setting off challenges to the people and the landscape that are still felt today.  Contact Madeline Matson.
