Gather the Harvests

11/20/2017

Sunday morning, as we entered this Thanksgiving week, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued our monthly theme of Abundance with reflections on the harvest --- but, she reflected, the harvest is not a single event; its different phases bring us different lessons about abundance.

The work of tending and weeding burgeoning plants reminds us of the work to be done if we are to have abundance --- or the just world we hope for.

The plenty that comes in when the fruit is ripe reminds us of the sacredness of giving and sharing, and the challenges of letting go and of distributing the bounty equitably.

Finally, as harvest gives way to winter, comes the seed-saving time, when we decide what to care for and spend our energy and resources carrying into the future, and what to (perhaps painfully) let go of.  We can't know whether our choices will turn out the way we hope, Rev. Nancy reminded us, so this process calls for deep faith, but through it we can participate in the abundance of the world.

Message: "Listening to the Abundance Within", Alexis Engelbrecht.
November and December can be incredibly busy months with an abundance of expectations and tasks. This service is designed to provide opportunities for quiet reflection and an invitation to, in the words of a Quaker saying, "let your life speak". All are invited to break bread together after the postlude.

If you would like to bring a loaf of bread to be part of the bread communion table, you are welcome to do so. In an effort to help things run smoothly, please observe the following:

- Cut your bread in advance in slices or serving size squares.
- Clearly write the type of bread you have with its ingredients (this will help people with allergies and food sensitivities).
- Take your bread and plate home with you when you leave - please do not leave anything behind.
Questions may be directed toward Alexis ([email protected])

Sharing Abundance with a Guest At Your Table

11/13/2017

Sunday morning, we continued exploring our monthly theme of Abundance with one way Unitarian Universalists work to spread abundance in the world.  The UU Service Committee is an independent nonprofit organization that works with the UU Association to promote human rights and equity throughout the world.  Supporting refugees, deportees, and communities affected by climate change, among many others, the UUSC partners with local self-advocacy organizations.  This helps to respect the dignity and brilliance of affected people while also making the most of funding --- even small gifts can make a big difference!  For much more information and stories of hope, visit uusc.org.

Today begins the annual "Guest At Your Table" donation drive to support UUSC.  Contact our Treasurer, Bob Antweiler, for collection boxes, donation envelopes, and more ways to contribute.

Always Just Enough, Always Room for More

11/6/2017

Sunday morning, Rev. Mike Adamek began exploring our Soul Matters theme for November: Abundance.  Abundance means something more and better than just having lots of stuff --- as many of us know, having too much can be more curse than blessing.  So where is the "sweet spot" of Abundance as a virtue?  Rev. Mike's answer was: "Always Just Enough, Always Room For More."  For me those words suggest the point where we have enough, but we don't have so much that it clogs up our lives and prevents us from accepting new things.  Rev. Mike's reflection however, revealed another understanding of "Always Room for More," in which there's always room for more guests to share in our blessings.  For him, he said, Abundance is the point at which our gifts overflow and we feel called to share them with others.

Showing your Heart

10/30/2017

Sunday morning, seminarian Andy Grizzle joined us once again to wrap up our monthly theme of Courage.  The feats of courage we admire in others, Andy argued, are often the fruits of training, learning, and risk management --- not as daring for the expert as they seem to the lay person.  To find deeper courage, Andy encouraged us to look again for the root of the word --- courage shows your heart.  And some of the most daunting situations are the ones where we risk learning what's in our heart.  We need the courage to show our hearts and to engage with others (especially those we've been taught are frightening and different from us) in the complex and vulnerable work of life and justice.

Abundance like happiness is hard to quantify. It's attitudinal and situational.  It is a term that is intimately personal yet always includes the larger circles of families, communities, states, nations, and the entire earth by which our individual lives are sustained. To embrace abundance in our lives we must be willing to see A-bun-dance on the table.

Courage to Be

10/23/2017

Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of courage.  The challenging times we live in call for courage, and we may be tempted to hear that call as a demand for public daring, but Rev. Nancy suggested going back to the heart of what courage is --- the word literally comes from a root meaning "heart."  The courage we need most is a heartfelt engagement with a deeply-felt life, continuing day to day even though the path leads through vulnerability and confusion.  She invited us to consider our ideals and values side-by-side with what we do each day, not only as corrective self-guidance but to give ourselves credit for the small but vital acts of courage we live out day by day.

Courage to Confront Racism

10/16/2017

Sunday morning, Katherine Connor and Sharon Morgan led our second Anti White Supremacy Teach-In.  Often we think of racism as a personal attitude, but racism and its harms are also about systems and policies that perpetuate oppression, not only in attitudes but in law and in fact.  Some of these systems may not even seem to be about race, but they hurt people of color disproportionately --- as well as hurting others who are underprivileged through disability, economic class, etc.

It takes courage to stand up against these systems, but Katherine pointed to many local issues where our voices can make a big difference: school issues like unequal discipline for students and unequal hiring of teachers, limited access to public transit, unequal rates of vehicle stops by police, and more.  Faith Voices for Jefferson City works on these issues and has an issue-finding session coming soon; as a member congregation we hope to send delegates --- please contact Katherine if you'd like to volunteer.  Sharon pointed out that many in our Fellowship have expressed a desire to work on these issues, and she distributed a survey about where we should go from here.  If you didn't receive the survey, please contact Sharon and Katherine.

Beyond Heroes

10/9/2017

Sunday morning, Alexis continued exploring our monthly theme of Courage.  Stories of courage by superheroes and those touched by magic can inspire and guide us, and indeed we are often tempted to turn our real-life heroes into "superheroes" who stand above the common run of humanity.  But in doing this with heroes fictional or actual, we let ourselves off the hook --- we admire the courage of others, rather than accepting the challenge of courage in our own lives.  Alexis reminded us that true heroes are not fearless; those who achieve something great have always had to achieve something while "doing it scared."  She challenged us to look for the place where we can use our gifts and passions bravely to contribute to the interdependent web of life, and she invited us to use our UU home both as a "harbor" for safety and healing and as a "launching pad" to propel us to new heights of courage.

The First Virtue, or at least the Second

10/2/2017

Sunday morning, Rev. Mike Adamek helped us begin to explore our Soul Matters theme for this new month: Courage.  Rev. Mike shared Winston Churchill's opinion that Courage is "the first virtue" because all other virtues depend on it.  Indeed standing for our beliefs often demands courage --- the moral courage of facing social censure, and at times even the physical courage of risking our own safety.  But when Mike related his own experiences of facing a difficult conflict, he found that while courage had been necessary, it also needed to be tempered with honesty toward self and others, to guide people to use their courage toward a just end.

Searching Together

9/25/2017

For Sunday morning's message, we received our first (but not last) visit from minister-in-training Andy Grizzle.  He talked about his experiences studying theology among fellow students from Christian denominations, and how the questioning arising from his Unitarian Universalist viewpoint sometimes made those fellow students feel as if their beliefs were being dismissed.  We are often tempted to see ourselves as scrappy freedom fighters in the cause of greater truth, but Andy found that his perceived hostility threatened his colleagues' most honest and intimate expressions of their faith --- their "Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder" as affirmed in our own UU Sources.  Even among ourselves, some of us may feel pressure to set aside our mystical wonder to find social belonging in our congregations.  Andy called us to open ourselves beyond labels and dogma to sharing of our core experiences and the ways we are called to be in the world.

Next Sunday begins October (already!) and our new Soul Matters theme: "Courage."

Next Sunday, October 1st:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"Courage," Betty Cooper
Courageous people change the world, but courage needs both heart and action. With two TED Talks, one from Ash Beckham, we learn that we’re all hiding something, so we need to follow our hearts and find the courage to open up.  And from Clint Smith we learn to find the courage to speak up against ignorance and injustice, because there is “danger in silence.”

Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am
Message: "The First Virtue, or at least the Second," Rev. Mike Adamek
Winston Churchill thought courage the first virtue because every other virtue depended on it.  A virtue is a form of human excellence and acting on what you know you should do is important. But is it the most important virtue?  I will offer a revisionist interpretation.

If you have a joy or concern that you would like to have read during the Service, please submit it by noon on Friday through our website: http://uufjc.org/joys--concerns.html

Plus Children's RE --- "The Meaning of Courage," plus Pour Painting.
Joanna Babb will lead a pour painting class for the students --- participants be sure to bring mess-able clothes!  The Fellowship will cover the cost of materials.

Come On In --- Come to Stay

9/18/2017

Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued our monthly theme of "Welcome" by reflecting on two personages of lore: the witch who welcomed Hansel and Gretel and tried to make them her supper, and Jethro of the Hebrew Bible, who welcomed Moses and made him his son-in-law.  These very different welcomes both had roots in the welcomer's needs for survival --- the witch's need for food, Jethro's need for connection and reciprocal kindness amid a harsh landscape.  Rev. Nancy called on us to acknowledge our needs as we welcome others in --- our dark thoughts, our fears, our motives --- but to beware "power over," surviving at others' expense, and look to "power with" that will help us thrive together.

Next Sunday, September 24th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
Terri Rodgers

Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am
Message: "My Irresponsible Search for Truth and Meaning," Andy Grizzle
UUs work ever more frequently with Christian congregations on social justice efforts in our community. As we spend more time together, it is natural to ask and answer about each other's belief systems. Through trial and error - but mostly error - Andy has collected some lessons to share on avoiding the unintentional alienation of other people of faith.
Divinity student Andy Grizzle from St Louis will be our guest speaker.  This will be Andy’s first time with us, and may very well not be his last.  Please come to meet and welcome Andy to UUFJC.

If you have a joy or concern that you would like to have read during the Service, please submit it by noon on Friday through our website: http://uufjc.org/joys--concerns.html
