Opening to Joy

12/6/2021

Sunday, December 5

This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin our month of reflections on "Opening to Joy." Joy, Rev. Mike said, cannot be manufactured; it always comes as a surprise, but we can open ourselves to welcome those surprises when they come.  If we harden ourselves because of our hurts so that we will never be surprised by pain, we harden ourselves against being surprised by joy as well.  In Rev. Mike's experience, joy is a vivid, intense feeling that comes when we recognize a positive connection to something greater than ourselves.  This recognition can come through doing --- or witnessing --- virtuous actions, through awe at the power and grandeur of nature, or through connection and love with family and friends.  However joy comes to us, we must allow ourselves the vulnerability of expecting joy in order to open ourselves to its life-giving surprises.

For those who wish to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their sermon from this morning is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/XjqPmOiNUOc.  Also note that UUCC's online services have now moved back to 10:30 am Sunday mornings.

This morning, we celebrated our annual Bread Communion.  The sharing of bread is a timeless symbol of welcome and mutual support.  Bread that is "broken" fulfills its highest purpose, opening up to provide nourishment.  Our hearts, too, fulfill their highest purpose when they are "broken" open to bless the world and the people around us.

Today also begins our annual Guest At Your Table fundraiser to support the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.  UUSC empowers grassroots partners to work for human rights around the world.  Stories from UUSC's work, donation boxes, and donation envelopes are available at our building, or you can learn more about UUSC's work and give online: https://www.uusc.org/.  Donations made through our Fellowship will be due in late January

This Friday, December 3rd at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents their monthly First Friday Film: "Here Today."  Veteran comedy writer Charlie Burnz (Billy Crystal) forms an unlikely yet hilarious and touching friendship with New York lounge singer Emma Payge (Tiffany Haddish). Emma unexpectedly wins a lunch with the comedy legend, but their relationship gets off to an extremely rocky start. Before long, each finds in the other a sort of soulmate, forging a deep bond in a story of friendship across generations. The film is based on Alan Zweibel's short story, "The Prize." Sunday, November 21

This morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of "Holding History."  The past looms large in our minds.  We use memory not only to know where we've been but to choose and justify where we are now and where we want to go.  The past is never just past, and Rev. Nancy suggested the following steps for navigating the dance of past and present:
  1. Show Up.  As much as you can, commit the energy to be fully present to this day and its ever-shifting possibilities.
  2. Gather and Hold.  Curiously gather as much memory as you can about what brought you to this moment.  Stay interested beyond what you want to be true.  Get a feel for what to hang onto and what to let go of.
  3. Evaluate.  Reflect on the past using the best standards you know.  The UU Principles are a good starting point for many, but notice and be honest about what really matters to you.
  4. Finally, Act.  When we act on the best knowledge we hold, it is never perfect, but life is always impermanent and imperfect, and still we are called to engage.  When we act, we create new history to hold going forward, and through this cycle we find our way forward.

For those who wish to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their sermon from this morning is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/o7iu-i8kHgQ.  Also note that, starting November 28th, UUCC's online services are moving back to 10:30 am Sunday mornings.

Tomorrow, Monday, November 22nd at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "The Silencing of Generational Trauma: Black Female Students and Gender-Based Violence in College."  In 2011, the Obama Administration initiated long-overdue conversations around campus-based sexual violence, gender-based discrimination and sexual harassment. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 requires schools (K-12 and higher education) to develop, communicate, and implement policies and practices to respond to and prevent gender-based discrimination. Over the last 10 years, more and more students have found the courage to speak up regarding their peers’ experiences and experiences of their own. However, Black female students are among the population least likely to report incidents, seek help or name their offender. Zakiya Brown is a doctoral student at Northcentral University and dean of students and Title IX coordinator at Lincoln University. She will describe her research findings and the impact of generational trauma on Black female survivors of campus-based sexual violence reporting behaviors.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Political Theology For This Moment

11/15/2021

Sunday service, November 14

Last Sunday we joined our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia as Rev. Molly Housh Gordon gave a message titled "Political Theology For This Moment."  Often we try to divorce matters of politics and theology, but all of our political acts reflect our values and faith, and all of our faith commitments impact the world and society around us.  Trying to declare a neutral "secular" sphere often just normalizes the status quo and entrenches existing power structures.  So how can we lovingly and responsibly approach faith and politics together?  Rev. Molly suggested that we pay attention to what our actions reflect "worship" of.  Does it align with the values we profess and want to express?  On the other hand, our values must pass the test of practical results.  If we live out those values, what kind of world do they create?  Do they create flourishing, diversity, and beloved community?  Do they create the world we want to create?  What are we worshipping, and what is that worship bringing about?

The sermon is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/-cK_uIqMH5I

Note for those following our neighbors at UUCC: Starting November 28th, UUCC's online services are moving back to 10:30 am Sunday mornings.

This Saturday, November 20th at 1:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "French Fiddle Tunes and Tall Tales: The French Creole Story."  Fiddler and cultural historian Dennis Stroughnatt became acquainted with the historically French Creole community of Old Mines, Missouri, as a student three decades ago and learned the community’s music and folklore from its tradition-bearers. He is now recognized as one of the foremost experts of French Creole culture of North America, especially that of the old Illinois Country (encompassing much of present-day Illinois, Missouri and Indiana). He has made numerous recordings and received awards from national cultural institutions. Via 300-year-old songs and stories, this program will take the listener on a fascinating rip through the French Creole history of Missouri from both a historical and cultural perspective and will highlight the enduring French identity of places like Ste. Genevieve and Old Mines through ancient French folktales, haunting ballads, and foot-stomping fiddle tunes.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Sunday Service, November 7

Rev. Mike Adamek began exploring our monthly theme for November: "Holding History."  Holding history can be a challenge for UUs as many of us are non-Christians committing to a tradition with Christian roots.  Rev. Mike has experienced this as a religious humanist, but shared three waypoints of our Judeo-Christian heritage that he can still embrace:
  • Covenant: Building our faith around promises that we cannot fulfill perfectly but that bring us into relationship both with the divine and with other people.
  • Mystery: While ideas like the trinity may not make rational sense to all of us, they can still be understood as something like Buddhist koans, profound ideas meant to get us past our ego's need to make sense of things.
  • Forebears: Earlier Christian movements like 16th-century Socinianism also emphasized reason and individual conscience, and for this they were often persecuted and denied recognition as being religion at all.  When questions of religious tolerance emerge in our own day, we should remember and hold this history.

Sunday, October 31st service

This morning, we were joined by Christhia Castro of El Puente Hispanic Ministry to talk about her organization and about the Day of the Dead holiday.

"El Puente" means "The Bridge."  Although the organization has Catholic roots and a Christian mission, they offer their services to Spanish-speaking people of all faiths.  Through language interpretation and other services, they help Hispanic people thrive and connect in the Jefferson City area.

Castro also offered a timely presentation on the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead (although Castro is not Mexican herself).  Practices going back to Aztec times have mingled with Catholicism, protest art, and modern sensibilities into a vibrant tradition.  Castro emphasized that the holiday is not a celebration of death, but a celebration of the lives of loved ones who have passed.  Day of the Dead altars, parades, and other festivities keep the departed alive in memory and welcome their spirits to visit those who still love them.

For more about El Puente's mission and ways you can help, visit https://elpuentemo.org/

For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service from today is available to view online: https://youtu.be/lyGyyFyIDh0

Highlights:
  • Our 30th Anniversary Celebration was a big success. Thanks to Gennifer Monteer and Lauraine Connelly for these photos! See our Facebook page for more photos of the event.
  • Coming up: Walk the Vote, Saturday, October 30, Community Park, 1-3. Help with our table!
  • Coming up: Day of the Dead service on October 31
On Sunday, October 24, we gathered to celebrate 30 years of UUFJC!  Thankfully, the weather was very cooperative, and we had a good turnout at the park.  In her message, Katherine Connor reflected on the history of our church as constantly evolving, as the history of human enterprise. She was able to have a unique perspective on UUFJC's history, but she surely spoke for all of us when she spoke of how the Fellowship has taught her, challenged her beliefs, enriched her life, and supported her in love. 176 people have signed the membership book since UUFJC was formed 30 years ago, and even though some of them have died or moved away, that's a lot of lives that we have touched, and that have touched ours. Looking forward, she expressed that her greatest hope for the Fellowship was that it continue with new people making changes, so that we hardly recognize anything anymore, because each day, our church is born anew.  (Summary by Rich Burdge)

Community Events this week:
Tomorrow, Monday, October 25th at 6 pm, Faith Voices for Jefferson City holds its monthly assembly.  This month's meeting is hybrid i.e. virtual and in-person. Did you know there is an election on November 2, 2021? There is a proposed sales tax increase to fund public safety. Join the Town Hall on Monday at the Joshua House Church 1136 E. Dunklin at 6:00 p.m. in person or online to hear from the Public Safety Commission and the community about what the tax does and what the impact will be on the public, so you can make an informed decision at the ballot box. Register for the in- person meeting and the online meeting at this link. Masks required for in-person attendees.

Also tomorrow evening, Monday, October 25th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library hosts: "Elderhood: A Discussion and Conversation."  Most people alive today will spend more years in elderhood than in childhood, and many will be elders for 40 years or more. Even though humans are living longer than ever before, we've made old age into a disease, a condition to be dreaded, denigrated, neglected and denied. Harvard-trained geriatrician Louise Aronson's Pulitzer-nominated book Elderhood is the subject of a discussion and conversation that invites participants to consider how aging and ageism affects popular culture, medical treatment and societal attitudes. The discussion will be coordinated by Mary Schantz, who has long experience in public policy regarding aging issues, Dr. Nancy Ellis-Ordway, psychologist and author of Thrive at Any Weight and whose academic research focuses on body image, and Madeline Matson, the library's adult programmer.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Tuesday, October 26th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents the latest installment in the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "The Importance of Learning a Foreign Language."  Have you ever wondered why it is easier for children to learn a foreign language than adults? How can the learning of foreign languages be advantageous for students and other adults? Sometimes knowing a foreign language can be a matter of life or death, depending on the situation. The benefits of learning a foreign language pertain to careers, more cultural awareness, study abroad opportunities, meeting new people and improvement in learning skills. Gloria Williams, assistant professor at LU, will share how she learned Spanish, French, German, Swedish, English, Japanese and Patois when she lived in Sweden, Spain, Germany, Jamaica, the USA, and the impact this has had in her life and career.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Celebrating 30 Years!

10/18/2021

On Sunday, October 17, those who gathered at our building shared a recently recorded UUCC service in which Rev. Molly Housh Gordon spoke on "Unitarian Theology for This Moment."  In the 1800s, Rev. William Ellery Channing's landmark sermon "Unitarian Christianity" defined an emerging religious movement.  While many UUs today would not identify with Channing's Christian framework, many of the Unitarian qualities he highlighted still resonate:
  • A rational approach to truth and spirituality
  • An anti-hierarchical respect for individual conscience
  • An optimistic view of human nature that sees divine potential in all

Especially in challenging times like ours, it still matters to be clear-eyed about reality, but to envision ourselves as worthy and capable of making ourselves and the world better.  Although none of us fully lives up to that divine potential, seeing that spark in each other opens us up to living in relationship and basing our faith on relationship and covenant rather than dogma.  We need that relationship --- we need to come together --- to move the world we see toward the beautiful future we dream of and commit to.

Cultivating a Faith Community

10/11/2021

Last Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued our monthly theme of Cultivating Relationship with thoughts on how to cultivate the special relationship that is a shared faith community.  Rev. Nancy identified three ways people can identify with a church: through how we behave together, what we believe together, and through a sense of belonging.  As UUs our tradition of belief centers on freedom, reason, and tolerance.  Through this, many of us feel a sense of belonging, of being accepted and supported while being free to be our authentic selves.  How we behave matters in fostering that belonging and relationship: how do our actions connect us together?  How can we behave with thoughtfulness toward the needs of others?  How can we take responsibility for our freedom and be open to the challenges and insights that come from being open to others in relationship?

If you would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, the sermon from their October 10th service is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/qnC6RADvjQ4

October 5, 2021

10/5/2021

This past Sunday, Rev. Mike Adamek began exploring our monthly theme for October: Cultivating Relationship.  In relationship we seek mutual support and nourishment with others in our lives through mutual awareness and respect.  Rev. Mike suggested three practices that can help us cultivate this:
  • Honesty: Resist lying to others and, hardest of all, to ourselves.  Face our pain rather than hiding from it, and be willing to realize when we have caused pain to others.
  • Empathy: Show genuine interest in others, listen to them, and be willing to accept their gifts without internal drama about how to even the score.
  • Fidelity: Be more loyal to the people in our lives than to our own desires --- respect those places that others can't go with you, the places where relationship cannot be cultivated.

If you would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, the sermon from their service this morning is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/a7PTexnw6pw
