Covenant Drafting this Sunday

11/14/2018

This Sunday, November 18th, we will be taking the suggestions produced in our last three covenant workshops as well as the earlier covenant workgroup, merging like points and creating a draft for the Fellowship to consider.

Our President, Katherine Connor, has created a categorized list of all the suggestions we've received, which you can view or download here: Covenant Workshop Results 2018

All are welcome to come Sunday; the more people involved in this process, the better!  If you have any questions or more suggestions, contact Katherine: [email protected]

Memories of our UU Past

11/12/2018

This Sunday, Jim Davis continued our month of focus on Memory with a look back on our Unitarian and Universalist past.  UUs often think of ourselves as (in the words of one of our hymns), "building a new way."  But it is also important to remember our roots, to respect and gain strength from those who paved the way for us.  Jim shared stories from the time of the Civil War, of Unitarians and Universalists who opposed the atrocities of slavery.  They struggled with despair and social pressure as perhaps we might, sometimes giving way, sometimes standing firm.  Let us remember that we don't face the task of "building a new way" from scratch, by ourselves.  Even as we move forward, the way we always do, we can ground ourselves in the memory of those who came before.

Next Sunday, November 18th:

UUA President's Statement on Pittsburgh

10/29/2018

UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray released the following statement about the shooting at Tree of Life synagogue:

"We grieve with those who are mourning the horrific mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.
"We grieve the lives lost to senseless violence at the hands of domestic terrorism. We grieve for those who were injured in body and spirit during this shooting.
"In our grief, we will also speak truths that need to be named. This was anti-Semitism. This was extremism. This mass shooting was a hate crime.  This mass shooting reflects unapologetic bigotry that we are all called to denounce and resist.
"May Jewish communities, both within and outside of Unitarian Universalism, feel especially held in tender love and care today and in the days to come. We are in this together.
"May we all hold each other especially tight, knowing this life is tender and precious, and love will help us find a way."

The Future of Our Sanctuary

10/29/2018

Our November Newsletter and Calendar are now ready to view or download:
Newsletter
Calendar

This Sunday, we concluded our monthly focus on Sanctuary with three members' perspectives on where our particular sanctuary, UUFJC, could be headed in the future.  All of them hoped for a future of vitality and growth, expanding our sanctuary to embrace new people.
Elizabeth Prenger emphasized the needs of young people, children and their parents, and hoped for renewed child-care as a complement to our Religious Education program, and for ways we can honor youth and young adults.
Jim Davis emphasized leadership development, moving beyond the pressure and scramble to fill offices, and urged us to consider calling a minister for our Fellowship.
Katherine Connor pointed to various ways to broaden our welcome, such as innovative services, revitalized music, and looking beyond Sunday services to ways we can provide community and spiritual support --- sanctuary --- to people who aren't interested in traditional Sunday morning church.

What are your ideas for our Fellowship's path forward?  Our board and committees welcome feedback and especially new volunteers!  You may also consider coming to our Art and Music Committees' planning party next Sunday --- details below.

Also Sunday morning, UUFJC joyfully welcomed Brian Wekamp as he signed our membership book.  Glad to have you with us, Brian!

A Gathering of the Holy

10/22/2018

This Sunday, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued our month of focus on Sanctuary, beginning with the origins of the word, from the Latin "sanctus (holy)" plus "arium (place)."  So what is it that we put in this holy place?  Maintaining such a place requires ongoing mindfulness.  Reflecting on a poem by David Whyte, Rev. Nancy suggested several attributes of the holy: it is central and carries a sense of essential meaning; it is a mystery that holds together the mix and flux of everyday living; it is a "beautiful, beckoning uncertainty," that is reached not by force of will but by stopping for reflection.
So what is it that we put in this center?  How is it that we look at history --- or, if we look honestly, at ourselves --- and find fear and hatred there?  Nancy acknowledged that Sanctuary can fill a need for protection, but she cautioned us about defining our sacred places by what we keep out lest we make exclusion itself sacred to us.  Better, she suggested, to focus on the gathering in of what is holy, what anchors us in meaning and in beautiful uncertainty.

A Sanctuary Church

10/15/2018

Sunday morning, we continued our month of focus on Sanctuary with a sermon by Rev. Chris Jimmerson, recorded at First UU of Austin, Texas in 2015.  First UU had become a "Sanctuary Church" for an immigrant facing deportation from the US and danger to her life in her country of origin.  Rev. Chris discussed the history of churches as Sanctuaries, and particularly the modern history of churches offering sanctuary to immigrants.  He emphasized giving sanctuary as a prophetic act, prophetic in the sense of speaking truth to power, critiquing injustice and envisioning change.  For him Sanctuary served two purposes, to transform the lives of those who needed protection and support, and to transform society in the direction of kindness and justice.  However, the blessings didn't even end there.  Seeing the transformation that offering sanctuary brought to First UU, the outpouring of generosity, helped Rev. Chris and his entire faith community find a renewed sense of faith and purpose.

Sanctuary for Us vs. Them, or for All of Us

10/8/2018

Sunday morning, Rev. Mike Adamek began our month of reflections on Sanctuary with the question of who is invited in.  Some, he said, see our community and our nation as a place that protects the purity of a "true" in-group, while others pursue an inclusive vision that welcomes in the stranger.  One vision is based in fear, the other in love.  Rev. Mike challenged us to go beyond our fears and self-interest, to see each stranger as a person with inherent worth and dignity, deserving a place of Sanctuary beside us.

Next Sunday, October 14th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am

Chris Jimmerson explored the tradition and the state of the sanctuary movement. How might it transform both the person given sanctuary and the faith community giving it?

How We See, How We Act

10/1/2018

Our October Newsletter and Print Calendar are ready to view or download:
Newsletter

This Sunday, Dr. Cliff Cain of Westminster College joined us to conclude our month on Vision with the connection between how we envision people and things and how we treat them.  Many, perhaps all instances of violence, war, and oppression are supported by certain visions of their targets: blacks as of inferior intellect, Native Americans as savages, women as dependent and irrational --- the list goes on and on.  Even the Earth itself; when we envision it as a mere object, a resource for our use, we abuse our web of life in unsustainable ways.  Cliff Cain offered hope, however, that spiritual traditions can create positive change by shifting visions of the world from kingship to kinship, conquest to befriending, and more.  The power to shape and instill vision is a vital one, because, as Dr. Cain emphasized, how you see influences or even determines how you will act.

Next Sunday, October 7th:

The mission and work of Empower Missouri will be discussed.  A part of the mission statement is: Empower Missouri advocates for the well-being of all Missourians through civic leadership, education and research.  Lucas and Ledbetter will tell us how they do it.

Message: "Sanctuary for Me and Mine, All Others Take a Hike," Rev. Mike Adamek
A Rational Egoist believes all rational persons should base all their actions on one fundamental principle, “Only do that which is in your best interest.”  If you don’t you are either stupid or naive.  Others may be Group Egoists, who believe you should be willing to sacrifice your personal best interest for what is best for your group. This group is limited to only the people who are like you in some crucial way.  This sermon will address the changing nature of sanctuary and how egoism has warped its value.

Looking Forward to the Journey

9/24/2018

This Sunday, we continued our month of exploring Vision with a sermon via video from our wider UU Community.  Rev. Wendy Williams, senior minister of Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden, Colorado, explored the idea of "Long Hauls."  It's famously said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and that first step can be the hardest, as we size up the road ahead and what it will take to make the trip.  What helps us take that first step --- and all the steps after, sticking to it when the going gets tough?  Rev. Wendy suggested that it's not the circumstances we find ourselves in that determine whether we're happy or feel we can go on, but what we bring to it, the way we envision it.  If we remember our ability to learn and grow through our challenges, our need for connection to each other, and our inherent dignity to stand up for ourselves. we will be able to see our way forward.

Next Sunday, September 30th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"A local visionary’s current strategies," Rev. Kim Woodruff
Rev. Kim serves as the Mid-MO Faith Voices leader.  In addition to MFV, she also serves on the Ministry Staff at Quinn Chapel and is a pastor part-time.  With these many positions, she continues to reach-out and shares her vision for our community, state and the world.  She’ll inform and challenge us to a “greater vision” for bettering our world.

Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am
Message: "How You See ... : A Question of Vision", Cliff Cain

Expanding our Vision

9/17/2018

This Sunday, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued our monthly theme of Vision with reflections on our blind spots.  When we envision the world we believe in and want, how can we see our way into the little corner of it that's ours to create --- and out of the little corner of the current world where we live?  Little by little over years and years, our experiences train us to see and act in certain set ways --- and worse yet, we can't see the blind spots we develop, often to the point that we don't even know we have them.  The more we seek comfort, or the more single-minded we become, the harder it is to see what's beyond our current focus.  We must choose to expand our awareness, pushing ourselves outside the familiar.  When we find the boundaries of our vision and move beyond them, we find new discoveries that bring us alive --- because, to paraphrase poet David Whyte, anything less is too small for us.
